I think I have Sleep Apnea, maybe hypersomnia too. I know the two can go hand in hand. Let's see, I'm not entirely sure if I snore at night or night or have odd breathing when I sleep. I do, however, wake up with sore throats and feeling utterly exhausted. It doesn't matter how much sleep I get, too little or too much, I take numerous naps during the day. It's like I never feel rested. And these aren't like little power naps, they're naps that can sometimes be 3 hours long.
I know it's best to probably see a doctor, but I don't know. My parents are just convinced that my sleep schedule is messed up and really, that I just sleep to much. This is a problem for me though, even if not to them. It's ruining my daily activities, since all I want to do is sleep, sleep, sleep my life away. When and if I decide to call my doctor and make an appointment, what do I say when I call? I would feel kind of dumb calling and saying, "I want to make a doctors appointment because I think I have sleep apnea or hypersomnia." Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give :) Posted on 07/04/09, 02:07 am |

For me, the first thing is to discuss this with your family doctor and he will refer you
to an appropriate doctor/clinic for sleep disorders. Also, just be honest and tell them what you have here on ds. Good luck!!

dont expect any doc to know much otr anything about sleep apnea so tape record your breathing or snoring or better still set up a videocamera, if there are gaps with no breathing then its apnea but with no gaps it can still be apnea
you need a referral to a sleep study centre for an overnight sleep study exhaustion is common from apnea, but can be misdiagnosed as depression or lazyness

You should see a Doctor right away. You only need to explain that you have extreme exhaustion ... they will tell you whether or not you have sleep apnea. I would start with your Primary Care Physician and he will refer you to the best place to go for your conditions. It could be something other than sleep apnea and you want to know that too if that's the case.

Welcome to the group. I don't want to sound like I am making light of your problem. I'm not at all, but you are 19. Most people that age want to sleep all the time. Even though you are adults your bodies are still going through weird things. This is something to consider but if you feel that your condition is more serious than that don't let anyone, including doctors, dismiss your symptoms to your age. Most doctors are still very narrow minded when it comes to conditions like Sleep Apnea, Chronic Fatigue Disorder, Fibromyalga and others. Stand up for your rights but still, consider what they are saying.
You may not have anything wrong or it could be a number of things. Depression can make people feel like this. Diet, blood disorders and ever worse stuff could be the problem. I don't mean to scare you but it's good that you are looking for help early. It's probably nothing serious but listen to the advice that people from this group give. Many of us have been down the same road and have our own stories. As stated before, try to record yourself (both audio and video) and ask someone to check up on you from time to time while you sleep and keep track of anything out of the ordinary. Keep a sleep journal with the dates and times when you sleep, how you feel and any other things that might help your doctor diagnose you. It sounds like you are being very proactive and trying to get a handle on it. That's good because many of us waited much too long. Keep up the good work and you'll be fine. Good Luck.
