I just had my first sleep study and boy what a horror show! I am glad that everything imporoved when I used the CPAP machine. I've learned so much about sleep apnea lately and the effects it has on your health. It's probably going to save my life!
I've learned that the most cases of sleep apnea go undiagnosed. That's sad! I've been thinking about writing a book or something to help people learn about sleep apnea. Something that would be fun for the average person to read as well as informative. I've got a few embarassing stories about sleep apenea. Stories about girlfriends leaving me because of it and neighbors complaining. Does anyone else have any funny stories about their ordeal with sleep apnea? Posted on 08/28/08, 11:08 am |

I have a friend who wears a full mask like I do. She came over to visit the other day. She was telling me that her husband says her face farts because of the mask. Of course, I looked at her like she was totally nuts. But then when she explained that she is referring to that little noise made by air escaping when the mask is not fitted tightly enough that she was talking about... well then I had to admit that my FACE FARTS too! Good one Breatheasy! I've had a few girlfriends break up with me because of my snoring. I guess it won't get any better when I look like Darth Vader and my face farts.

I have a funny but sad story. I went for a sleep test at a new doctor's office. I'd had 2 tests a few years earlier when I was first diagnosed,,,one in a sleep center of a hospital and the other at my house. When I went in, I discovered the attendant that was going to run the test didn't know how to run it! All she seemed to know how to do was attach the electrodes. When I tried to tell her what to do, she got uptight and a little mad. At the halfway point of the test, I again tried to tell her what was next and she told me I wasn't supposed to wake up even when she turned on the lights! Needless to say, the test was a flop although I did get a new CPAP machine. I told my insurance company about the problem and they refused to pay the doctor!

Sounds like a case of physician heal thyself, and you are the physician Foxysdad! No wonder the insurance company didn't want to pay them...geez...who would? Like you said, it is a funny, but sad story.

I don't have a funny story to tell. When I first tried to talk to my doctor about sleep apnea, he ordered an overnight pulse oxcimetry test done which was inconclusive. He then ordered a sleep study done and that showed I didn't have sleep apnea. So, my doctor told me I was tired all time because I worked nights and refused to do anything more. I later got a new doctor and talked to him about my sleeping problems. He ordered another sleep study done. This one was done at a different center than the first one. They caught the sleep apnea and put the mask on me for the second part of the night. I soon had my CPAP machine and new mask. But, the mask I was given was the one with the nose pillows. It was very difficult getting used to it and it was extemely uncomfortable. I kept getting stuffed up and couldn't breath through my nose which made it impossible to use the CPAP. So, I quit using it. Now, 6 yrs later, I've a new mask, a different one and am trying to learn to use it. After only two nights of using it, I'm experiencing the sinus problems again. I'm hoping it's just a matter of getting used to using the CPAP. Keep in mind the more serious and not so funny experiences people have as well as the funny stories. I think the funny ones are important, but are probably few. Good luck with the book!!

I had had my CPAP machine for only 3 weeks when I travelled out to see my daughter on very short notice. She has a very small apartment in LA. When I visit I use an really nice inflatable mattress to sleep on. After searching her "very small apartment" we were in pocession of only the mattress and no pump.
After attempting manual inflation until we were giddy and blue in the face I realiZed the answer. I inflated the bed with my CPAP! So there we are then, your CPAP can help you sleep in more ways than one.

ok...filling your airbed with the machine has got to be a prize winning story. How creative of you to even think of it. Truly, a funny, amusing story in my book! JoAnn ~smile~

Very impressive Inojack! McGyver would be impressed. How long did it take to fill up and was it much longer than using the pump?

It didn't take long at all, my setting is 10.
Just whipped off the mask and away it went.
