I'm completely exhausted. On my way to work this morning ....dozed at the wheel for a few seconds. I'm scheduled to try the CPAP next week.
I feel funny asking my physician for time off, but I cannot concentrate, I'm sitting here pratically in tears because it is such a struggle. I feel completely exhausted. I dont know what to do. I feel weird asking for time off due to this condition. Any suggestions?

" Don't feel weird... it's more common than you think, and a legitimate cause for concern, especially if you're falling asleep at the wheel! You aren't any good to your employers if you can't give 100%, and you can't give 100% if you're trying to operate in a chronic sleep-deprived condition.

All you can do, is explain the situation and ask for the time off. All they can do is consider your request, and grant it or deny. Aside from not getting what you need from them, nothing bad is going to happen.

Be strong... the CPAP may turn things around for you, and all will be well. You just have to hang in there until you know for sure whether it works or not. If you need to, a short sick leave between now and then shouldn't be too difficult to acquire.

Good luck to you! "

" Thank you Brenda9. I appreciate your advice. I stayed home today and I am going to call my doctor to see if she will write me a note. I've already used 7 of my vacation days for this so far this year. Somedays I just feel like I cant make it in. Thanks again for your reply. It's nice to know that someone out there is listening and supportive. "

" Here in Colorado we have something called The Family Leave Act. I'm not sure if it's national or not. Originally my doctor said that they usually don't fill out the paperwork for cases like mine, yet she knew that I was a mess and couldn't function. My blood pressure was sky high, I was falling asleep at work, and I couldn't conentrate. I told her that either she helps me or I lose my job and probably die. She is the best doctor I've had in years but that's not saying much. Doctors aren't always the nice people we're led to believe they are and I'm not to sure that they have much common sense. They don't like to have any hassles and you sometimes have to explain things to them. Remind him/her that if you do lose your job or hurt someone while driving there is going to be a lot more hassles they will have to deal with. Sometimes employers are much more agreeable to working with you if a doctor agrees. Good luck! "

" until you get your CPAP, it usually helps to sleep on your side or sleep sitting up in a comfortable chair, this usually reduces the apnea

patience and a positive attitude is needed to get used to a CPAP "
