HELP: I think my fiance has sleep apnea

My fiance and I have been together for about 2 years. We have wonderful times together and are best friends but I think he has sleep apnea and it's ruining our relationship.
Last week he had a sleep study done and his doctor said to call back on the 8th of this month for the results. I am waiting impatiently. The time can't move fast enough. I know this will sound weird but I hope he indeed DOES have sleep apnea, because we will have the answer. For months his constant falling asleep at all times, his constant exhaustion and lethargy has been draining our relationship. He works full time at an office and when he comes home he is so groggy and out of it most nights he just crashes, snoring very loudly with breaks of silence in between. On weekends he can sleep until noon and still be exhausted and fall asleep on me while we are talking or watching tv. When I try to wake him, (short of slapping him) he is in a coma-like state. I feel alone all the time. To make things work I am out of work and am home all day alone and just want to be with him when he gets home and he crashes. My frustration has hit an all time high and I am very depressed about it. One of the worst things that happens is when he drives home and pulls in the driveway and falls asleep in the car. I have to try to wake him up and get him in the house. His energy levels seem to plummet instantly at times. It's always a struggle for both of us. Does this sound like sleep apnea to you? Any personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!!! I can't be the only one that feels this way. thanks S Posted on 04/03/09, 10:04 pm |

When I had my sleep study I was pretty sure I had Sleep Apnea. It was nice to actually hear a doctor finally say it after months of trying to get help. Most doctors are absolutely worthless when it comes to sleep disorders. It's sad that we have to wait two weeks or more to a diagnosis after the study.
I'm glad that your boyfriend is getting some help. If he doesn't he will die from it. No kidding, it damn near killed me! Even worse he might kill someone else if he falls asleep driving or has a heart attack or stroke. I'm certainly not a doctor but his symptoms seem pretty severe and makes me wonder about narcolepsy. Before I started using the CPAP machine I would stop breathing, wake up several times a night to use the bathroom and woke up in the morning with horrible headaches and not feeling like I slept at all. That's because I really didn't sleep. For nearly a decade I never reached the deeper sleep patterns that the body needs to recuperate. My brain wouldn't work and I couldn't remember the simplest things. My blood pressure was through the roof. I would fall asleep at work or the dinner table. I would be driving and not remember how I got from one place to another. Finally I had a stroke and the doctors still wouldn't discuss Sleep Apnea with me. They thought it was a made up disease. I couldn't see a Pulmonologist without a referral and thank God I finally found a doctor that would give me one. Now that I've been using the CPAP machine I feel much better. Not perfect but much better. It's been about six months since I started using it. I'm finally starting to feel like I have a life instead of just struggling to exist. I hope things work out well for you and your boyfriend. The best advice I can give is to quit bitching about it and wear the damn mask. The mask sucks and we all hate it but wear the damn thing. It's worth it! Good Luck, Uther
