Hi all ,came back from my holiday and had a week rest then on to my surgery on june 1st.
Well as you all told me it was not as bad as I feared ,felt the first lil' prick and then nothing , the thought of them cutting so close to my eye and nose was the thing that terrified me most. They had to do 3 sweeps as they said it was deep and the graft was taken from the front of my ear and ouch it is still sore but at least the stitches were removed on wednesday (16 of them) any advice on how to manage the scar on my ear would be helpful please,as the nurse didn't say and to be honest I didn't ask ,she was more concerned telling me about my graft do's and dont's The dressing was taken from my nose/eye and covered again with a plaster type thing that has creamy stuff in it and this has to be changed every other day (daughter is going to be doing that ), for how long I dont know. I have an idea how big the area is but have not seen it as they only gave me a mirror after the dressing was put back on. I have to go back to clinic next week to see how the graft is and if it has taken . How long before we know if it has taken ,does anyone know ,I know its only been a week but its so painful . Onwards and upwards is the way to go now ,just thought I would let you know how it went I hope everyone is getting stronger day by day ,,, much love mads aka gail ps sorry if this sounds mumbo jumbo but the vision in my eye has not come back yet so tiz hard to see properly ...... I had a flap sugery, so it's different.
Massagiing the scar itself is a must, if the scar is ready. Massage helps break down the collagen, which can form an irregular scar. One thing I feel I should I point out to everyone out there, that if it seems that your flap or graft is not "taking" or might fail, ask about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Its time consuming but it works. I can't imagine having to have another surgery bc of a failed flap or graft if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an option. I'm not implying that your graft will not take (I don't have any idea), but I thought if someone is confronted with that horrible situation, they should ask about it, because IT WORKS.

I hope you are feeling better. You sure went through a lot. I had to go back 3 times and had flap reconstruction. I didn't have any pain, so I feel for you. Massage seems to be the most recommended treatment of scars. Make sure you ask you doc what to put on your scars. My doc said nothing, just massage. Some people use vit E. My doc warned not to use it. There is some research on the internet about that if you want to learn more.

I had Mohs in May, and a graft from the same location. Probably not as big as yours. My ear was sore for about a week, but healed up real fast. My nose is doing well also, the graft was set in the skin and allowed to fill in. So now after a month it is almost even with the old skin. Kind of new and shiny skin in the middle of a crater.
I agree, massage the areas, and it will break up the scar. But wait until it is not sensitive to do so. You should wait at least 2 weeks after, you get the stitches out . I had a cloth pillow on mine for a week, and then they took out the stitches that held the pillow in place, the small stitches are dissolving stitches. Make sure to put sunscreen on your nose, to prevent the area from getting burned, as the cells are sensitive to light when healing. Good luck! Jon

Well its almost 5 weeks into my recovery and i thought all was well,
but a few days ago my swelling around my eye increased and it looks as though i have done a few rounds in a boxing ring ,doc has put me on another course of antibiotics thinking i may have an infection setting in . Thank you for the info on scar massage, I still have lumps and bumps down the donor site but i have been massaging twice a day using vaseline ,as thats what i was told to use. Jon how is your graft doing, is all well with you ? and thanks I have my suncream ready but have been told not to use it yet ? Lisa and Nyiaca thanks for your kind words ,they do help when you are feeling a bit low , hope you are all keeping well and staying positive , gail

So sorry to hear that. when I had naother BCC removed, my face swelled up. I got so depressed, but then...it went away! Adn I felt so great.
It's disheartening when you think something is past and it flares up again. but fortunately, it sounds like the antibiotics will clear it up, it will get better! Best.

I am glad that you are done with the surgery, I was shocked when I saw all my stiches, I made sure not to bend my head , I am using vitamin E and vaseline to keep moist and massage my scar.
It looks better than my mastectomy old scars. I bought special makeup to cover it when I go to work, Time flies and soon you will just be taken care of the scar. Please keep us posted.

Hi dwag, sorry i took so long to respond ......
Hope your doing ok ,i know its scary but there is light at the end of the tunnel, and positive thoughts are being sent your way . Well the antibiotics seem to have worked as my face is not so sore. The graft seems to be taking, still lumpy and my eye is smaller than the other one ,i don't know if it will get much better ,hopefully it will as i'm 6+ weeks into the healing ,i am really trying hard to keep positive. The donor site from the front of my ear is looking really good now ,a few bumps along the scar but nevertheless doing fine. OH and my vision is almost back to normal now ..... My next Mohs surgery under the left eye is going to be scheduled for october....seems a bit of a wait but hopefully they know best Healing thoughts to all ...gail

Its 8 weeks today ,sheesh time sure does fly when your'e having fun ...not.
Healing is going well and the graft seems to be getting better every day ,the ear donor site is hard to see unless you get up close and personal. I was wondering if I could stop the vaseline and get a scar cream to massage the lumpy bits now. I not back in clinic til sept 2nd ...so can't ask my derm....
