What do I say?

So this morning my little boy called me from his dad's house begging to come home. My 2 kids live with me full time and visit their father every summer and one holiday per year, either Christmas or Thanksgiving depending on the year. We live in different states and the kids' dad rarely comes out to visit the kids - he has been out three times in two years. This year the summer trip is to last 5 weeks during which I will be working and going to school. It was designed for the kids to fly back right before their school starts as they are in Kindergarten and preschool this fall.
So my question is.... what do I say to my little one (he is just 4)? What if anything do I say to my ex regarding this?

" They are only little, maybe 5 weeks is too much. For a 4 year old that might as well be a year. When my daughter was younger I used to get these phone calls two and she was there for a week. I would just talk to her about what she's been doing and try to get her happy, mostly they just want to hear your voice. I also spoke to her Dad to find out what was happening and stressed that if she doesn't calm down then she had to come home. She is now 10 and can't managae more than 2 weeks away from home. When they are not involved in their lives then you can't expect them to stay for any lenght of time without getting homesick, fact of life and your ex will have to get used to it. He needs to know that it's ok to come home otherwise if you force him to stay he wont want to go again. Hope it all works out ok xx "

" I appreciate your thoughts 'cruzn the problem is that I don't get to change the amount of time just because I feel like I want to... there is a lot more to the scheduling.
I know he is homesick, I just wish there was something I could say to help him feel better. The fact is, we all have to learn to deal with this broken up family - it just breaks my heart. "
