I have shingles, though no official diagnosis (no health insurance). I have had it a couple of years now. It affects my lips. I get flare ups every month or so. The pain is intense. I wake up with orange pus (sorry for being graphic) on my mouth. I use anitbiotic ointment with pain relief and anbesol to get through the pain. Does this ever go away? Will it be like this forever?

Know how you feel. Im 53 and feel like my life is over. Cant do much because the burning and itchy feeling drives me crazy. Started Gabapentin 3 days ago 100 mg 3x day. It seems to take the edge off, but I realy dont want to be on meds for the rest of my life. Just want this to stop!!!!

you need to get on an anti viral medication because what happens is what has happened to me due to lack of insurance , i'm taking eldaberry juice and its helped alot but the problem is Postherpetic neuralgia which is caused from shingles and because it effects the nervous system it takes a long time for the pain to go away , i'm concerned about your shingles being on your face because you can look vision and or hearing i was only treated recently it was horrible i seriously wanted to die and i have many days like that mine effets my lower back and colon so i have to get it under control i'm already starting to have muscle damage but i'm stuck with veterrans administration .please see if there is a low cost medical clinic

They make over the counter anti-viral cremes for the lips that are over the counter, but not cheap- like $20 for a small tube at walmart -you could ask a pharmacist. If it is chronic, and you can find low cost medical care -just saw one on tv the other night for $6 a day for one and $10 a day for a family-sorry I can't remember the name -you may benefit from a systemic anti-viral drug such as acyclovir or valtrex. Neurotin is the drug of choice for post herpetic neuralgia-pain after a herpes infection. Blessings, Teri
