Topical Recommendations?

I am 30 and just diagnosed with shingles. I am on day three of steroid treatment and have a scrip for a pill to help with itching (similar to benedryl, I guess), but haven't gotten any advice on what to put on the rash.

It's three areas on my abdomen and back that are about an inch or so across - have gotten slightly worse-looking over the last few days, but don't seem to be spreading (knock wood).

Anyway, I was wondering what everyone here recommends to put on the rash to help it go away faster. Honestly, I'm sort of scared by this diagnosis and I know this is a superficial thing (the yucky appearance of the rash v. lasting nerve pain, outbreaks, scarring) to focus on right now, but I'm so frightened, I can't really take in the other potential problems associated with this.

Thanks for any help...

" thank you for answering me. that was kind of you . please think positive. you are young and you will heal. i can see it takes a while unless you are lucky. keep in mind there are many people who heal 100% those people you dont see on here. so when you read the posts, remember they are written by the people who unfortunately are having some setbacks and problems. i guess once someone is healed, they dont want any rememberance of shingles and just get on with their lives. who can blame them. " I use a antibacterial salve (like neosporin or bacitracin) with pain relief and it helps some. "

" My Dermatologist said nothing but, I am using Curel anti Itch lotion and it seems to cool the itch and burning without stinging like Benadryl gel did. Aloe Vera from my plant also to help it heal. I read to not scratch or let clothes rub sores or you'll get infection or scarring. Mine is at waistband area so going without panties and wearing cotton dressses for now!LOL "
