I had shingles last year. Now I am numb where the rash is and I have occasional shooting pains up my leg ( not sever buy annoying) and every once in a while I will have the burning tingling pain on my hip and thigh area. It lasts anywhere from a couple of days to a week or so. I don't get the rash so was wanting to know if this is a flair up and if I am contagious when it happens. My first grandchild is will be born in a few months and I want to know if it is okay to be around the baby if this is happening. Thanks

What you are suffering with sounds like Post Herpatic Neuralgia, it's ongoing pain caused by the nerve damage from the shingles. It can go on for years (or forever, sorry!) after an outbreak. I get shingles on my arm and sometimes I will get a sharp pain or a dull ache in the limb. You aren't contagious unless you have blisters - I have been advised that it is the fluid in the blisters that contains the virus and so you can't transfer it unless you are actually having an outbreak. You should read up about PHN on the internet, there are some things you can take to minimise the pain - Larrea Rx is one, and also capsicum cream... Good luck, and don't worry about visiting your grandchild!
