First breakout - Month 3 - Any advise?
I have been taking Valtrex (500mg once a day) since December 4th and I feel like it isnt working. I have noticed a pattern with this breakout. At the beginning of the week I will be rashy but by the end of the week, I will be rashy and the sores come. I just finished a round with Zovirax. Apply every 4 hours for 2 days. It seemed to keep the sores at bay this week but what about next week? And the week after? I am frustrated. I want to cry. How long does a first breakout typically last? I should add that the breakout started at the end of October but I wasnt diagnosed until December 4th and I started treatment that same day. Posted on 01/08/08, 10:01 pm |

Have you asked the Dr. for a higher dose? I take 1gm = 2 500 mg. That helps keep the break out away but... I'm having issue with the rash, I also use the cream but once you quit using it the rash comes back. I don't know i"m not a dr but I know at times I've doubled my dosage for a day or two on the Valtrex. Your not alone.

Take Lysine!!! It's amazing! It's an amino acid. You can buy it at health food stores & some drug stores...Shoppers Drugmart for one. I'm in Canada & I'm pretty sure it's even more readily available in the USA. You can keep taking Valtrex or whatever at the same time. Take 2000mg every few hours when signs of an outbreak are coming on the first day, then about 1000mg 3 or 4 times a day for a few more days until the symptoms are gone. This way you can completely prevent an outbreak. In the case of an outbreak already on, take the high dose a little longer. It won't hurt you,& over time you'll figure out when & how much to take it depending on your own needs. Google lysine to learn more about it. Good luck! Please try it...I'm sure it will work for you. Let me know!

I got my first breakout at 18. It was the worst one I've ever had (meaning don't worry, it will get better) and lasted for at least a week. I could hardly walk. I've had it for 15 years now and rarely have outbreaks. I know this sounds like forever when you just get it, but...I also don't use any meds. I found that just letting it take it's course was the easiest way.
