MIND-BODY therapy

I'm beginning to look into body-mind therapy and/or body work and I was wondering if anyone else has had any experiences, suggestions, or successes with body-mind therapy.
The abuse happened over 20 years ago. I started talking about it somewhat and attending typical 'talk' therapy once a week 2 or 3 years ago. I have made some progress, but I feel that I have also been at a standstill for awhile. The abuse is causing intimacy issues and I have not been able to have a gynological exam. I only remember the abuse up to a certain point, but my therapist feels that my body remembers it. Those are all reasons why my therapist and her colleagues feel that body-mind therapy could help me. She says she does not know a lot about it and of course I don't either. I'd appreciate any feedback of experiences, suggestions, or successes with body-mind therapy. Posted on 11/04/09, 10:11 pm |

Acupuncture is one way to do this. I did it for years and it helped a lot but my mind had a block with the severe depression that I developed. It is physiological and psychological. We store repressed emotions of grief and other things in our bodies. Whatever you decide to do, you have to be ready willing and able to do the work. It can be overwhelming and open the flood gates to the emotions that have been stored in our cells. Those negative emotions are very toxic! YOu have to find someone who you will be very comfortable with and trust! we need lots of love and care when dealing with the release of these emotions. I wish you the best!

Thanks for your advice freecannon. Did the severe depression develop as a result of the acupuncture and the opening of the flood gates?

Hoping456:
Bodywork focuses on improving physical health. Body-mind therapy is a process that works on the relationship between the body and the emotional processes(mind) of a person. Some of the better know body-mind therapies are: 1) EMDR founded by Francine Shapiro 2) Somatic Experiencing founded by Peter levine 3) Focusing found by Eugene Gendlin 4) Hakomi Method founded by Ron Kurtz 5) Sensorimotor Psychotherapy founded by Pat Ogden 6) Rubenfeld Snyergy Method founded by Ilana Rubenfeld 7) Integrative Body Psychotherapy and 8) Trauma Touch Therapy founded by the Colorado School of Healing Arts. I have experienced EMDR, Somatic Experiencing and Focusing. Each one was helpful in its own way. Trauma Touch Therapy was developed especially for survivors, but unfortunately it is hard to find a qualified practitioner. You can call the Colorado School of Healing Arts, however and ask if there is anyone in your area. Be mindful of the fact that it is important that the person you work with have the proper training in the technique you are considering. Acupuncture is another avenue but the downside is since the practitioner is not skilled in psychotherapy you may be left hanging with the stuff that comes up. Here's to your healing. Glad you are considering body-mind because they are powerful paths to healing. xx

Wow! Thanks for the info SuzA66 and for taking the time to post it! You said that you tried a few avenues. How often did you have to attend sessions and for how long? Also, only if you feel comfortable sharing, how would one typically finance sessions? Was any of it covered by insurance?
