I just got done listening to an hour long coverage from NPR and have read through few articles online. There were many possible causes for the event being discussed, starting from computer games, and ending with the girl herself making a bad decision to “hang out with the wrong crowd”. And with all that coverage, I did not hear one person mention that widespread of pornography may be, just may be partially responsible for a generation of kids who think that it is OK to sexually assault an unconscious girl.
Don’t get me wrong. There were always bullies and there will always be bullies. But taking somebody’s lunch money, and picking on somebody’s clothing, is a long way away from watching somebody being raped. People were taking pictures with their phones, and nobody cared to call the police. Once again, where did these kids learned those behaviours? I think we all know where. But once again, nobody is talking about it… Posted on 10/30/09, 02:10 am |

Its terrible i know!! Its a pack mentality.
We have recently had a similiar story down here in Australia. 18 year olds on a footy trip. Partied all night, drank and watched porn, picked up some girls (about the same age) and kept them prisoner and raped them for days by up to 20 of them while others watched!!! One of them is a senior at school about to do his final year exams! Where does the lunacy end? I am so sick of hearing these binge drinking stories and the aftermath. They are not drunk when they start, so responsibility should still apply. Horrible, bloody horrible some human beings.

No one wants to blame porn.. because so many "average" Americans view porn-- if they blame something as horrific as that on pornography, they have to consider what horrible things they may be capable of doing.
To me, there is a direct correlation between this event and porn. Porn is so mainstream now, and the more hardcore stuff is becoming more mainstream. I know kids not yet in their teens who have admitted to watching that crap... Tell me, where else would they get that idea to do such a horrific thing?

There are dozens of factors that are contributing to the rise in the number of sexual assaults, and hundreds of thousands of studies that are supposed to be looking at this problem. A lot of the blame can go to poor parenting and dysfunctional family systems, but porn also plays a lead role in the problem. When rape and/or nude scenes become the norm in movies being released by the major Hollywood studios, of course you're going to see life imitating the movies. If something happens in the movies, and the actors and actresses who star in these movies get Oscars for their performances, it's hard to tell the kids (or adults for that matter) that such behavior is wrong. And look at how women and women's bodies are being objectified.
Some of the recently released movies are nothing but showcases for actresses who are willing to expose themselves. "Powder Blue" with Jessica Biel is an example. Other, older examples would include movies such as "Striptease" with Demi Moore, and "Showgirls" with Elizabeth Berkley. Such movies are now considered to be mainstream. And showing such stuff on television or at the movie theaters simply makes such behaviors/activities appear to be "normal" or "okay". Nothing could be further from the truth. Now I don't want to come across as a prude or a religious fanatic, but if things continue the way they are going, soon rape will no longer be any big deal, and women will then be seen as nothing more than "things", as sexual objects, not as human beings. Both of my daughters have told me stories over the years about how various guys have tried to use and abuse them. Fortunately, both of my girls know basic self-defense skills and judo/karate, so they have been able to protect themselves (and in the process, often leave the guy in pretty bad shape). But what about the young ladies who don't know how to take care of themselves? Are they to be allowed to become victims of gang rape and sodomy? Something needs to be done? But in today's permissive environment, I'm not sure that the general public really cares about this issue, and that, in my opinion, is very, very sad.

One other point needs to be made about this increase in the incidence of rape. While rape is a sexual crime, the motivation behind it is usually power, control, and domination. The perpetrators feel as though they have no control of their life, but they can at least control a woman and get her to bend to their will. It is domination expressed in a sexual fashion, and motives sometimes include the need to embarrass and humiliate the woman.
If you would be interested in reading more about the relationship between sexual addiction and sexual offending (child molestation and rape), I would refer you to the work of Geral Blanchard, M.A. Blanchard works with the Wyoming prison system, and has designed to sexual offender treatment program for sex addicts that has proven to be extremely effective.

I blame the parents. There is no single other factor in child or teenagers eyes than their parents. Pornography and video games are prevalent and have their influences, but strong parenting would absolutely overarch any of these things. Parents need to suck it up, and quit avoiding difficult conversations with their children. If I was there I would have probably been hospitalized after trying to knock out as many of them as I could. 1. because of the natural moral necessity to do so 2. because I know that my father, despite his old age, would knock me out cold if he even guessed I didnt do the right thing.
Everyone wants to blame society and the school system. Its the parents.

I agree Bosh most of the time its family influences and upbringings, but traumas such as childhhood sexual assaults and rape are often factors, and they are not always involving the parents.
