I've been reading the postings here and I can identify with just about all of them. I am about to lose the woman I love because of my addiction. I have been jailed, car reposessed, and put my employment in jeopardy ultimately because of my addiction. And still it wasn't enough to prompt me to stop. I am 34 now and my behavior started when I was about 19.
I have spent a fortune on porn, prostitutes, and at strip clubs. I have contracted STD's and had unwanted pregnancies due to my condition. I have tried to stop time and time again but I've never been able too. I work overseas so I don't have access to the facilities and groups there in the states. I am tired of living a life of shame and I want to stop. How do I stop!? Posted on 06/29/09, 08:06 am |

Hi greeni75,
I've been through a lot of the same stuff you have, so I know what you're talking about, and I've felt the same hopelessness you are. But I'm here to tell you that recovery is possible. Since you are new to this whole recovery process, I'm going to make a few suggestions to get you started. First, you need to get some idea what this disease is all about. For that reason, I would suggest you read a book titled "Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction", by Patrick J. Carnes, Ph.D. This will give you the basics. You can order the book from AMAZON.COM, or from the publishing and distribution are of Hazelden (www.recoverysuperstore.com). If you would like to go on from there and learn a bit more, there are suggested reading lists (and a whole lot of other helpful information) available on several websites: Sex Help www.sexhelp.com/ Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health www.sash.net/ Sexual Recovery Institute www.sexualrecovery.com/reso... Now you said you worked overseas, but you didn't say exactly where. Some of the Twelve Step groups for sexual addiction have groups in various locations in Europe, Asia, and Australia. You might want to check out this possibility. Sexaholics Anonymous (S.A.) www.sa.org/ Sex Addicts Anonymous (S.A.A.) www.sa.org Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (S.L.A.A.) www.slaafws.org/ Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (S.C.A.) www.sca-recovery.org/ Sexual Recovery Anonymous (S.R.A.) info@recovery.org On each group's website, you will find a "Where and When" listing which will show all of their group meetings all across the world. This list will also include their telephone groups, and their online meetings. If you can't get to a meeting in person, perhaps one of the telephone or online groups would work for you. Next, you really need to get into counseling to help yourself work through all of your issues. The groups I told you about earlier (the ones with the reading lists) will have listings of qualified and certified therapists who can help you with this disorder. If none of those listed happen to be where you are, I guess you just have to take a chance with whatever local talent might be available. Good luck! Finally, I'd ask that you keep in touch with this site here at DS. This can be at least one source of support for you for you as you work through things. There is a lot of wisdom and experience here. Please use what's here for you. These folks will always be willing to help. Take care, and I'll chat with you later.

Greeni75, my heart is torn with your story. I just have one question for you: "Do you really want to stop?" Don't answer immediately, think about it and ask yourself if you would do anything to stop.
If your answer is yes then I will be happy to share the little knowledge I know. Take care, Santhon
