I have recently admitted my Dad and Mom into a nursing home. I think my Dad is giving up and I feel as though I broke his spirit. He won;t eat and I feel guilty. He has Alzheimer's and cannot live alone. Any advice?

Do not feel guilty. It is much safer for them in an environment where they can get constant care. The best thing you can do for them is visit them often, at different times of the day and week, unannounced and be on the look out for substandard care. Do not be afraid to speak up if you see something that you don't think is right. Many of us will have to face this situation at some point in our lives, my heart and prayers go out to you.

Good advice. Don't feel guilty is easier said than done but PL provided very positive steps you can take!

I am sorry about what is happening to your parents. Its not your fault and your doing the best you can for them.
Alzheimer's is in my opinion what is breaking your dad's spirit, not you di55.Don't carry the guilt.Take care of yourself too.

I agree - do not feel guilty. My husband's mom has the big "A" and is in a nursing home. We had a room built on the house and tried to keep her home, with help..She started slapping, oh it was awful..we had to get some help. I think you should visit, and during different ours. You do the best you can. That disease just robs their mind...I hate it. May God give you strength, courage and peace. Linda

Guilt falls into two distinct categories:
Deserved and undeserved. If you do something EVIL with evil intent you SHOULD feel guilty. That is why we have a conscience. it separates us from sociopaths. Taught pr self-inflicted guilt, social guilt, religious guilt is a trap...but you have the key to let yourself out of it by reminding yourself that you did what you with the best of intentions - to help, not to cause harm! Free yourself! Did you do for your father what you would have wanted something to do for you? Then you followed the Golden Rule and there is nothing o feel guilty about.
