I have a long history of self injury, and I will no go into describing the details as it may be triggering for some readers.

Upon my last hospitalization for bipolar mania (and my self injury which was becoming severe), the pdoc in the hospital began treating the SI with naltrexone (REVIA). It is an opiate antagonist, commonly used for persons going through withdrawal like cravings, alcoholism, and addiction. Off label... it is used to reduce the urge to pick at skin and self harm.

I know, it sounds ridiculous (that's what I thought when he first prescribed it to me) but... since then... I have not had the urge to cut. At all. I have been in the manic state where I would have SI'ed, but I haven't.

Please Google the medication and see what articles there are supporting it's off label use for skin picking and cutting. I hope it can help someone else the way it has helped me.

~Ann
