I have never had spinal fusion, but many on here have had it. Most seem to do well for great lengths of time. I always look on my children as on loan from God. They are all in his hands, just as we are. The good news is there is less risk for her to have the surgery than if she were having it as an adult. God's hands are the best place she and the rest of your family can be! God bless and I'll remember you and your daughter in my prayers.

Stay positive and give her encouragement that it will be ok. I myself had surgery at 13, and thinking back what helped me the most was knowing I had the support of my family. I have started a new support group called - Ahead of the Curve - on the Yahoo Groups. Going through the surgeries years ago, I want to get involved and pay forward to kids that are dealing with Scoliosis now and facing surgery. Especially the girls that are already going through so much anyway at that age. Where is you daughter having surgery at? If I can offer any support and inspiration, please let me know.

I am 44 and had the surgery at age 16. My daughter is 13 and just had the surgery February 5th of this year. She is doing FANTASTIC! If you didn't see her scar, you would never guess she went through that. Of course I totally understand your being scared... I was PETRIFIED! I think more so because I knew what was going to happen to her and she did not. I was totally shocked and thrilled to see her surgery was so more advanced and her doctor was absolutely amazing. I know this is a scary time for all, and if you, or your daughter would like to talk to me or my daughter, please contact us!
And btw, I must take a moment to applaud gentrycat on her dedication to paying to forward and helping others with her support group. I think that is fantastic! best wishes to you and your daughter, Please let me know how thing so. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm 18 now and had surgery for scoliosis when I was 14. Yes it was scary for me and especially my family. But it turned out just fine :) My back is better than ever and I got through it all well. Your daughter has your support and that is the most important thing. Chances are the surgery will work out perfectly and you will be glad it is done and successful. My thoughts are with you :)

Thank you to everyone who has said so many kind words and to those that are praying for my daughter Savannah. We are feeling at peace somewhat about the surgery. God is our strength and we are leaning on him. Savannah is seeing Dr. Settecerri at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak,MI.

We are scheduled for the first blood donation (2pints) on Monday, June 8th. Savannah came down with a head and chest cold last night so I am a little nervous about donating. Anyone got any advise on that? I wanted her to feel 100% healthy since they are doing the blood draws only one week apart. Her surgery is scheduled for June 22, and they are taking blood on June 8 and 15. Is this safe? Does her body have enough time to build its supply back up to a safe level. Savannah is on a high dose of Iron and Vitamin C. Again, if anyone out there can say a prayer for her we would greatly appreciate it.

Savannah has 5 days till her "Spine is in Line". We went for our second blood donation on Monday and her iron levels were too low. We have decided to give her blood bank blood if neccesary. She is now on 975mg of iron per day to boost heer hemoglobin. We are getting a little anxious about surgery day and it feels very real all of a sudden. We know that our faith will guide us through. I just wanted to say hang in there to all that are getting ready to go through it and we are praying for those that have already been through it. We admire your strength and thanks for all the supportfrom this site. God Bless

I'm in the same boat as you. My 12 year old will have surgery on August 10th. I've been okay until now but am starting to feel anxious although confident that everything will go well. My daughter seems oblivious to what is going on which is somewhat of a blessing. Hope everything goes well with her and you.
