Advice:
sciatic pain after spinal fusion

Hi. I wore a brace as a teen for a 30 degree S curve. By age 41 (a year ago), the curve was 65 degrees, so I had surgery with fusion of T3-L4. I have had worsening nerve pain down my right leg -- it's now constant burning pain that is really difficult to live with. I've tried Elavil and Neurontin and 2 epidural corticosteriod injections with no improvement in the pain. I've been told I have herniation and nerve compression in the disks below the fusion. Has anyone experienced this too? What (if anything) has worked for you? Thank you!

" The same thing has happened to me. I had a spinal fusion in 1979 when I was 14. In 2005 my back pain started to spread down my right leg, it hurts so bad that a year later I had to quit working and go on Disability. I've taken Methadone for years for my back pain, it wasn't helping much when my leg starting hurting, so my Dr had me start taking Percocet as well. Both meds usually help make it better, at least where I can tolerate it. This is just my opinion, I think Elavil is useless for pain. I would talk to your Dr and see if he will give you something a lot stronger than Elavil. Is he a Pain Mgt Dr? If not he could refer you to one. I hope you get to feeling better. Hugs, Bonnie "
