What all happens when you go in for surgery? Do you give blood that day in case you need it during the surgery or a few days before? Are you put under anesthesia while lying on your back or stomach?

" My surgery was so long ago, in 1979 I didnt give blood that I remember,I do remember I was put under anesthesia on my back. When is your surgery scheduled for? I understand its a lot easier on you now, much quicker recovery and no full body cast for 9 months. Good Luck to you-Bonnie "

" I didn't donate my own blood. I had a transfusion of 2 pints.

I was given medicine in my room, liquid or pills, can't remember.
In the OR prep room, I was on my back when they gave me bubble gum gas ( my choice from a few ), of course this was Children's Hospital Of Kings Daughters. I was only out for 5 minutes for them to put in my IV. Then they gave me the best dose of bubble gum I ever had, lol.

When I woke up again, I was in recovery. I'm sure they had me on good pain meds because I didn't feel any discomfort until the next day, then more meds. "

" On the morning of my surgery..
I got to the hospital and was taken to have my blood pressure/ temperate etc taken. Then I met with the surgeon and anaethesiologist for 1 final time.
I then changed into the (very fashionable) hospital gown and was taken down to the prep room.
In there, I just sat down on the bed while they put a IV line in my hand. I couldn't feel that atall, as they had put numbing cream on my hand.
Then they gave me a drug through the IV to calm me, makes you feel like you're slightly drunk. And that's the last thing I remember! After that they must have given me the anaesthetic.
Then what literally felt like 10 seconds later, I was waking up in recovery and it was all done
I didn't give any blood, but I needed a couple of transfusions after :) x "
