Post Surgical Depression

I am a 48 year old female who has had Scoliosis since the age of 13 (please feel free to read my profile and journal entry). On June 4th I had a total spinal fusion, spent 4 months in my parents home as the first step in my recovery was wearing a TLSO Brace which limited me to what I could do for myself. Now I'm back in my apartment with my boyfriend and things are not going so well.
Recovery from this surgery is very difficult to say the least, and everything is bothering me. I feel that I may be suffering from Post Surgical Depression. I cry all the time, unable to make decisions, no ambition to do anything (tho I manage to get myself to physical therapy twice a week) but most everything else is to much to deal with. I think I've decided to ask my doctor to put me on an anti-depressant and maybe even seek psychiatric help. Is there anyone else in the same situation and can offer any advise? I'm to the end of my rope here. I can't even handle being in a relationship right now and keep thinking about moving out. This will be difficult if not impossible as I am on disability and cannot afford to live on my own without additional government asistance. Anybody with advice would be appreciated. sorry you feel this way:( i heard that people can get depressed and have anxiety after surgery and feel more vulnerable physically. Its understandable to feel this way but yo should definetly talk to someone. For me even a week hospital admission takes readjustment when i get back home so i can only imagine with surgery.i hope things can get better.maybe you could talk to your boyfriend about your feeling depressed. And if all else fails you could stay with your parents for a little while again maybe.sorry if my advice is not good.

Please seek help for your depression...doctor (meds if needed, supportive family and friends or support group, and most of all talk to your boyfriend...be honest and open, it is you who needs the comforting.

I have not experienced the type of surgery that you have; however I have recently had a Tonsillectomy and Septoplasty, which appear to have left me with Post Surgical Depression. I'm seeking out anti anxiety meds from my doctor, because I cry every day and feel that I have totally lost my joy for life. I have never felt this way before, but can't imagine going through my life like this! There is NO quality of life and I have to take Xanax to get through the day and Ambien to get through the night. I've read that this can happen with any type of surgery, but I can't stand feeling this way!
Any ideas for help???

I am sorry you are feeling this way :(. I had scoliosis surgery in August and I went through something similar. Please talk to your doctor. He/She should be able to help. It will get better. This may seem different but I try to explain to people your mind needs to catch up with your new body. Once this happens, you will feel so much better. Hang in there!
