I have had scleroderma since I was 14, now 29. In the past 4 years I have begun to have chronic diarrhea, 4-5 times daily. The dr says that it is not linked to the sclroderma but has no clue to whats causing it. I also have my hands swell and break out in a painful rash. I have tried prednisone, but as soon as it is out of my system all my symptoms return. Can anyone help.I am uninsured, so med advice and treatment is very limited to me. I have both linear and morphea types on my right leg and lower back

I have the same problem. It could be IBS, but recently mine is from swollen lymph nodes in my bowels. They are actually obstructing my bowels, and only letting the diarhea part out...
There are excellent meds that help diarhea. Bentyl is one, as well as nulev. It may be worth paying for a doc visit and let him know you have to pay your own meds, he may be able to prescribe you something cheap. Alice

I too have this problem. I can't leave my home without taking immodium. It does help for 3 hours, but then I need another if I am going to be away longer. My gastro doc prescribed lomotril. it is a narrcottic that causes your gut to slow down. only draw back is I can not take it and drive. it makes you drowsey, but it does help. also I am on predisone, and this has helped immensly with the colltis problems. wish you luck

You should be checked for celiac disease, particulary if this is a blistering rash. There is an association between scleroderma and celiac. Both can be caused by the DQ8 gene (DQB1*0302). Dermatitis herpetiformis is a rash that only celiacs get, and of course diarrhea can go with that also. Get a referral to a gastroenterologist and ask to be checked!

Has anyone ever heard of Habba Syndrome? (We all Habba syndrome at one time or another – Ha! Forgive the cheap pun.) Habba Syndrome was first described by Dr. Saad F. Habba, as a condition in which chronic diarrhea is associated with abnormal activity and excess bile being released by the gall bladder. Dr. Habba (who checks out – he's got his bona fides in order) first described and attached his name to the syndrome (which was published) in the early 2000s. It is different from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as it doesn't present with abdominal pain and generally improves with fasting. Treatment is usually a course of bile acid binding agent therapy, and some of them are generic – so it might not run you payday loans to treat it, if you get diagnosed.
