Has anyone any idea of whats causing this, I've suffered from sciatica pain for 5 years with different levels of duration / intensity but always after sleep ie mornings only, this happens every day. While there are flare ups in gradually the pain appears to be getting worse.
Pain starts couple of minutes after getting up and radiates from centre of bum to muscles in lower leg, lying down usually causes pain to subside but this can take minutes or hours, the pain returns upon getting up and this process must be repeated several tomes before pain goes away. It does not restart until the next morning. In general the longer I stay in bed the worse the pain is both in duration and intensity. No back pain. Treatments include 2 physiotherapists and a chiropractor – currently carrying out Pilates exercises with a view to improving core stability. This appeared to help for a couple of weeks but pain has returned and during the last week pain has been intense for between 2 to 5 hours. How can lying down bith cause and make worse?? Hi, Anngay -
I'm afraid I won't be much help in explaining reasons for the way sciatica presents itself but I can offer my support since I am also suffering right now. Some nights when I'm lying down, the pain continues to shoot down my leg. Changing positions may or may not help. Walking can be excrutiating but only for periods of time - it's not constant. Walking up stairs is very painful since putting all my weight on my problem leg can really trigger the pain. My dr has me on Cymbalta for the nerve pain - I assume I'd be worse without it. Having another MRI this week to see why things have flared up. I hope you get some answers, and more importantly, that you get some relief! Jan

HiJan
Its enough to know that other people are out there and can understand!! Sciatica is a horrible pain to both suffer and get rid off... I haven't had an MRI yet but I'm scheduled to have one - hopefully soon, I'll ask my doctor about Cymbalta - for me getting through the morning is the worst thing but after that I can do anything and it won't come back - which I find really strange, I keep trying to find a reason for it and unanle to find one!! The worry is that it gets worse over time. I find stairs will always make it worse when I'm feeling the pain, who knows what causes flare ups, I seen a chropractor once and that helped but I suffered a herniated disc on the other side a week or so later, I think that pulling on my back must have irriated it, so I'm afraid to go again!!! Good luck with your treatment I'll let you know how I get on. Again many thanks

Hi Anngay,
I am sorry you are in so much pain. I can understand what you are going through. I have two herniated discs, L5-S1 was fragmented and the fragments were on my sciatic nerve, causing major sciatica down my left leg. I just had a microdiscectomy last week which helped immediately. For me, the only thing that helped the sciatica before that was laying flat on the floor with my legs on the coffee table/couch. What position do you usually sleep in? It sounds like it is not so much that laying down is causing the problem, but how you are laying. You were probably told this by your doctors, but the best way to lay down is on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. Have you tried changing your sleep position to see if that helped at all? I hope your MRI shows the drs what is going on and you can get proper treatment! Good luck!!!

Hi ~ Here are the 6 most COMMON causes of sciatica:
1. Bulging or Herniated disks 2. Spinal Stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal 3. Spondylolisthesis (the vertebra slips forward over another 4. Trauma (a car wreck, fall, sporting accident 5. Piriformis Syndrome ~ This is hard to diagnose and cannot be seen on an MRI. 6. Spinal tumors None of these sound very desirable, but these are the most common. I've had sciatica for 23 years, and it's been caused by herniated discs and a poor surgeon! Best of luck and God bless. Hugs, Lee

Just to share my experience, After I lay down, my muscles relax and begin to contract, This seems OK, until I get up to walk or stand and then I put a demand on the muscles to stretch rapidly. This causes the nerve problem in the leg to get bad quickly. If I walk around a bit, it seems to warm and stretch the muscles and I eventually feel better. I have had to get up and walk about every other hour through the night for the past many months in order to lessen the pain.

I suggest stretching each and every time you have the opportunity throughout every day. It helps me compared to when I don't. Mine (from '04 wreck reinjuring a 5 year old sciatic injury) makes it necessary for me to SitStandSitStand about every 15 minutes. I just do it s-l-o-w-l-y. (issues not all sciatica). Pain still awakens me and I have to do stretches for 5-10 minutes before I can sit up in bed and stand. Sometimes I even fall back to sleep while doing them LOL. Much like Mikz, mine really get angry if I make a sudden move. Walking causes my tale & leg muscles to warm up and expand and when they do, it feels like someone hit me hard with the butt end of a baseball bat in MY butt. Since you are able to, I would think working on your core is an excellent way to help retain your ability to balance when the shooting pains attempt to knock you off your feet.
