New- Sciatica Pain- Can't Deal With This Pain

I have had Sciatica pain now for almost nine months. I went threw the injections. Did the PT. And none of these helped my pain. so I had the back surgey and then six more weeks of PT three times a week. By the end of the 6th week I could hardly get up off the table to leave from the pain. Doctor went ahead and released me to go back to work. I should add this was a work related accident. Even thoug I would tell him how much pain I was still having. But he worked for the insurance company. So he didn't pay attention to me when I would tell him how bad my pain was and that it was so bad that I couldn't sleep at nite from the pain. He told me to take over the counter IBP. It dosen't even touch the pain I am having. Since then I have called back to the doctor and complain about the pain I am still having and for the last 3 weeks I have gotten hardly no sleep at all. It keeps me up most of the nite. He keeps telling me the pain will go away with time. And that is it. I feel these last three weeks days and nites I have had have gotten me to the point where I am very depressed and I don't want to do anything. I don't leave the house much right now. Between the pain and no sleep I homestly don't know how much more of this I can go threw. I feel like no one is listening when I say I am in pain. It has gotten to the point that when I walk sometimes I walk with a limp from the pain. I am stating to worry cause I DO NOT want to live like this forever and when no one will listen to help you it's like what do you do. This whole ordeal has been very hard and very draining. It's been a battle since it all started. Going threw work mans comp has been a nitemare to. They have fought me all the way on everything. I know I am going to find a doctor in the Topeka Kansas area and go see him and get a second opion and see if he can't help me. So if anyone would happen to know of a good doctor in Topeka Kansas could you please let me know. Or if anyone can tell me what I can do in the mean time to get some relief I would grtly appreciate it so very much. Tired of being in pain and sleepless nites. I need help badly.

" Sorry to hear of your pain. You should be very careful in how you proceed. If you find a knife happy doc, you could have surgery that you dont need and it could make recovery impossible. If you get a doc that pushes stronger and stronger meds, you could get hooked on prescription drugs, very easily. I know how yo are feeling and I understand the desperation. Just take your time in checking out your doctor and dont hesitate to get second or third opinions if something doesnt seem quite right. Read the other folks experiences here and on the back pain group, it is an education in itself to learn what the others here have experienced. I had previous experiences with back pain and one took over a year before I recovered, but it did get better. I am currently at about 8 months with this episode. I need to learn that I am prone to this type of problem and take better care when lifting and twisting the back and keep up the exercises. Best of luck to you and I hope your condition improves soon. " Hi ~ I don't know what disc they did surgery on, but you may have scar tissue that is causing the problem. There is a procedure they can do to break up the scar tissue ~ it has to be done between one and 2 1/2 yrs after surgery. NO LONGER or the tissue will become fibrous and they won't be able to break it up. It's called the Racz procedure. There aren't alot of docs who do it. Usually it's a pain management doc who will do it, so you might want to get into pain management with a doc who knows something about this.

Just a thought ~ I don't even know if it IS scar tissue. An MRI with and without contrast material MIGHT show it.

I've had sciatica for 23 years ~ yes, years. It's been horrible and I've had to be on pain meds or else I wouldn't be able to walk as it's progressed to a point that the pain is unbearable. Now, it seems that the other leg is beginning the sciatica. Oh goody.

Best of luck and God bless! Hugs, Lee "

" Hi and thank you very much for your reply. Yes I have had heard this procedure. And I am going to go to another doctor here to get seen a second time to see if there isn't something they can't do to help me threw all this. My heart goes out to you. Oh my 23 years. I can't imagine enduring the pian so long. Just what I have gone threw has been terrible but you have been threw so much. So can you tell me what meds are you on and what do you do to help yourself get threw it all? I just went to a doctor this morning to see if I couldn't get something for the pain and something to help me sleep at nite. This is a doctor I have never seen before. He put me on hdroco/apap7.5-325m for the pain and Diazepam 5mg to help me to sleep at nite. And he copied off a bunch of excercies that I can do at home. Which I have been doing already. But I guess I will see if this won't get me some relief for now until I get to the other doctor. I sure hope. If there is anything else that you think that you could share with me it would be much appreciated. And again thank you for writing and giving me your thoughts and you take care! Hugs!! "

" Careful with the Vicodin. You can easily get addicted and that's not a good thing on top of the pain. "

" Yes, be careful with the opiates. I had never taken them before for any significant length of time, but then I took them just 9 days, got horribly constipated, stopped the meds, but then had withdrawal symptoms. Going through Oxycodone withdrawal while experiencing sciatica from a herniated disc is a nightmare--so be careful--

Many hugs to you. I agree that you need to keep searching for the right doctor, don't give up! Also, you may want to consider acupuncture--which is increasingly recognized even by mainstream medicine as being particularly useful for alleviating sciatica pain. And there are no side effects or dangers, like there can be with chiropractors. "
