Anyone helped by Lyrica?

Hi, Friends -

Wondering whether anyone has gotten any relief from Lyrica. My dr just started me on it today but benefit won't be felt for week, if it does help. Not sure if it's better than Neurontin which I know is also given for nerve pain. Does anyhone have an opinion? I have stabbing pain shooting down both legs - had surgery (decompression) 2 weeks ago and I'm told it can take months for the nerves to calm down. Thanks for any insights you can offer!

" Inlotsofpain -

Is gabapention the generic for Neurontin? I did try that but it knocked me on my butt! I had the Lyrica prescribed but I've heard from more than a few sources that the most common side effect is weight gain - no thanks to that! I'm still struggling to find the right med. I do try to walk the treadmill at least 3/week but it leaves me so sore - the surface is just so hard. any suggestions? "

" I have had good luck with Lyrica. It has relieved some of my sciatica. Hands get puffy, but not gaining weight. Just happy for some relief.
Neurotin made me VERY sick, but others love it. We are all different. "

" I've been on Lyrica for a few months It was over 300 bucks for 100 pills OMG!. My dr started it slow, I went from 1 pill a day the first wk, then 2 a day the 2nd wk, the 3rd wk I was on the full dose of 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. I did find that it helped me with the sciatica not back pain. I did feel really sad while taking it, but I didn't tell anyone. I'm still on it after my surgery. I had the disk between L3 and L4 removed on 6-3-09. Now my leg is fine, every so often I feel a pain or two go down my leg but the Neurosurgen said thats normal, it has to heal. Now that I'm not in so much pain I have food craveings That I didn't before. I lost 15 lbs since I fell and hurt myself in March, I hope I don't put it back on now. "

" Since hurting my back, I've had so many ups and downs with my weight, much worse when I'm inactive. I had a laminectomy last May (08) which corrected my right leg sciatica but the left leg still flares pretty badly. I think I'm dealing with permanent nerve damage now - may need to try the nerve stimulator next. Just lost 20+ lbs on Weight Watchers and not interested in putting them back on because of meds! "

" I'm already overweight from mental health meds, but the Lyrica has really helped my leg pain (from sciatica) the tingling and stabbing pains have seriously been diffused since being on it. Unfortunately right now I am out and waiting on Medicare to make their minds up to pay for it.

It figures the one med that works best for nerve pain is the hardest to get. Jeesh. "

" I was on Lyrica for a little over a month for sciatica caused by herniated discs, and did not get any relief from it. With that said, I was on a relatively low dose (75-100mg). The best treatment I have done was actually massage - it increases blood flow to the muscles and nerves. Good luck! "
