Advice:
How to relief the pain

I broke my neck in 1995, and when this incredible pain started almost 4 weeks ago, I assumed it may have something to do with that. Since investigating, I had to concede that I have a typical case of severe sciatica. I have tried Ib Brofin and have also seen a chiropractor for the last 4 days, all to no avail. The pain is driving me nuts. What can I do. They took X Rays of my back and siad I have a badly rotated hip, and the muscles are causing the sciatic nerve to be compressed. yet after 4 visits, I have no relief whart so ever.

" For GOD'S SAKE do NOT continue seeing a Chiropractor or get anymore MANIPULATIONS!!! You broke your neck! You could end up paralyzed, even tho' this guy may only be manipulating your lower spine. I was told my 2 Neurosurgeons (spine specialists) to NEVER let a Chiro work on my spine unless I wanted to end up in a wheelchair.

Those X-rays he took are useless cause they do NOT show the disks - the soft tissue between the vertebrae. You could have herniated disks and it would NOT show that on the X-rays. Sciatica is caused many times by herniations, and his Rx of a "rotated hip" sounds like BS to me. All you're doing is paying for umpteen visits.

See is NEURO-SPINE or ORTHO-SPINE doctor as soon as possible. The longer you have sciatica, the better the chance of nerve damage. Again, STOP seeing the Chiro!!! I can't stress that enough. Good luck. "

" I agree re: Chiropractors

I am in the Medical Products Business and get all the Chiropractic Journals and such and just can't believe that the FDA would allow these people to make the claims they do. It so happens that a certain % of people are "helped" by Chiros but they are people whose pain is completely Psychogenic in origin and would probably get relief if they believed that talking to their neighbor's dog would help.

It is a nutty profession to put it mildly. "

" Ok, first off I have a herniated L5-S1 and sciatica down both legs proven by an MRI. I would NOT say my pain is psychosomatic. I've actually had a psych evaluation and have been CLEARED. I've been dealing with this for 6 years, the past 2 being severe. I've tried every treatment out there and still have problems, so no, talking to the dog, epidurals, PT, medicine and much more DO NOT WORK FOR ME. I see a chiropractor BUT HE DOES NOT ADJUST MY LOWER BACK DUE TO MY CONDITION!!! He does distraction manipulation, which is stretching the spine in a way I can't do myself. Also, he does a TENS unit with ice or heat, depending on how I'm feeling and theraputic ultrasounds in combination with electromuscle stimulation. Both therapies help to decrease inflammation and prvide temporary relief which in my opinion is better than none. He charges a lot less than a PT would for these treatments and they are EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS A PT WOULD DO. CHIROPRACTORS HAVE TO GO TO THE SAME AMOUNT OR MORE SCHOOL AS REGULAR DOCTORS DO. In my experience, there are very good chiropractors and very bad chiropractors and not much in between, so research and knowledge is key. You have the right to ask him not to adjust you if he wants to. I don't know what I'd do without him. He is the only person who's helped me WITHOUT MEDICINE.

Henbro- I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It took you a long time on the inside to get to having the pain you have now. 4 visits is nothing compared to the time it took you to get like this. NOTHING is going to take this pain away fast, not even Morphine, because pain is the last symptom to show and the first to leave and nerve problems are complicated. Yet, even when the pain subsides, the problem is still there. I agree with Leeall that you should go for an MRI. As for your rotated hip, this is what happens when your body is trying to protect itself from pain. You contort yourself and your muscles spasm to prevent further injury and try to protect you from pain. While this may not be your actual problem causing the sciatica, this is a direct result of PAIN. So, the things he is saying are very real. He is there to gradually help your body calm down and potentially free you from pain, although the last part is not garunteed. I'm not sure I agree with the muscles compressing the nerve, which is why you should get an MRI to look at your discs. You are ACUTE right now so nearly nothing will help immediately. Eventually, your pain will calm down and you can begin things such as stretching and gentle core strengthening exercises. I have a lot of experience in the MEDICAL FIELD, not medical products, as well as being a chonic pain patient, and I have so much more to say but I'll leave it here for now. I'd be happy to help you in any way I can, I'm here for you!!!

Much love and understanding,
Lisa "

" Oh honey, you need to get a hold of Skelaxin, it works wonders! Ibuprofen loses its giddy up after you use it so much, but I've noticed if I take a Skelaxin once every other day or two, that the pain isn't nearly as bad. Try taking it at night. There is also Neurontin, which is given for nerve disorders (real nerves, not the mind) among other things. Good luck and best wishes,
HUGS,
Rosey "
