Judged for having RA

I have been going to the same asthma dr. for 15yrs. Recently, I applied for social security disability and the lawyer contacted the asthma dr. to get the necessary info (I am applying mainly for RA, asthma secondary). One of the nurses questioned me, "Why do you need disability?" She acted as if I was faking because I don't "look sick". The receptionist's who had always been warm and welcoming didn't even look at me, the nurse who was a friend was brief and rude...the experience was just terrible. I am normally not overly sensitive but it really hurts that people think I am faking or taking advantage of the government...I didn't ask for RA, I never complain, I'm grateful for my life...yet I get looked down upon. I used to work as a nurse, there I was respected, not any longer.
Thank-you for listening.

" nurses are there to do their jobs, not to judge. that is not in the job description!!! ya know, as ron white says, you can't fix stupid!!! good luck with the disability. we all know full well, we appreciate it when body parts do what you want them to do. but you never know when you are going to have to develope a new way to do something... if at all. good luck, deby "

" Wow Mitzy, I am sorry you had to gothrough that. People can be insensitive and rude. I have heard that "You don't look sick" from a supervisor who was trying to find out what chronic illness I did have. Little do they know they we try to put a smile on our face and grit our teeth while we are in pain just to get through the day. And folks are so right, we never know the day that may come when we are unable work. "

" I really remember what Christina and others have said - smiling through your gritted teeth because the pain is so bad.

I'm glad we all have this site - it keeps us sane!

" If someone does that to you again.. don't keep quite set them straigth! At least you'll feel better.

I have been supprised by the ignorance a few times by people in and around the medical profession. I guess I always assumed that nurses and other doctors know more than just what they are trained in. It doesn't actually seem to be true... they can be just as uninformed about arthritis as the general public.

I was having some heart tests done and I had to get on a treadmill. I warned them about my RA and that I would not be able to run or even speed walk. One of the nurses still cranked up the speed when I told her not too. She just looked at me like "what your problem, you're young, and don't look sick".

Boy did I give her an earful! Don't put up people's ingnorance. "
