Judged for having RA

I have been going to the same asthma dr. for 15yrs. Recently, I applied for social security disability and the lawyer contacted the asthma dr. to get the necessary info (I am applying mainly for RA, asthma secondary). One of the nurses questioned me, "Why do you need disability?" She acted as if I was faking because I don't "look sick". The receptionist's who had always been warm and welcoming didn't even look at me, the nurse who was a friend was brief and rude...the experience was just terrible. I am normally not overly sensitive but it really hurts that people think I am faking or taking advantage of the government...I didn't ask for RA, I never complain, I'm grateful for my life...yet I get looked down upon. I used to work as a nurse, there I was respected, not any longer.
Thank-you for listening.

" Mitzy,

That really burns me up. Who do they think they are to judge you? They probably would curl up in a ball if they ever had to live with half the pain you've lived with and worked through.

None of us knows when the day will come that we won't be able to work. If someone told me last year I'd be having a hard time just getting around by this time I never would have believed them.

I have so much repect for you just for being civil and not telling thenm off. It would have been well deserved. But you took the high road.

Sometimes when I encounter these rude people I just have to answer in monosyllables to keep from stooping to their level.

You are loved and respected here. Ignore those women. They sound like they're all sharing one brain cell between them. You have more class in your little finger than all of them put together.

((Hugs))

" Sandy, "They sound like they're all sharing one brain cell between them." So true.
Really sorry this happened like that. People can be such holes. Disability is there for anyone who is disabled. You are disabled. What is their problem!? Are you supposed to be in a wheel chair, and have no arms or legs, blind, deaf, wearing depends before they think you're disabled??? Sorry, that really p***d me off.
You paid into the system that is there for you now. I agree, ignore them. Till they've lived in you hell, they have no right to treat you like that. And if they did, they wouldn't have. "

" I am sorry you were treated in such a way. Don't feel bad they have no idea. You are right you never asked for RA it's not your fault at all. We are all with you. Hang in there. "

" Like I keep saying, people have no clue what this disease does. I am a nurse, and I never really knew about it til it hit me last Jan. Shame on those people for treating you like that. You hold your head high and try not to let it get to you. People can be ignorant and cruel. erica "

" Mitzy - I really agree with the other posts. I work full-time but I know at any point my RA could bite me in my butt and I might need assistance.

You do not deserve the treatment you got and that doctor's staff needs sensitivity training. You were way too kind to them but it is common for us to feel shame about what we have. The time for that is past. I agree with keeping your head high - you deserve respect.

" Mitzy, I agree with all the previous posts. Noone has the right to judge you. Unfortunately, in the disability arena your doctors must all be on board. Possibly you can speak directly with your RD and not the nurses. Prior to applying for disability I talked wit all my doctors to be sure they were on board. Ultimately it is the doctors that get you approved. Just an aside to make you chuckle. I called my RD for a refill on syringes for my MTX as I was down to one. I told the nurse to get in the script ASAP because I only had one hneedle left. She commented that I was fine since I only take the injection weekly. I told her that often the syringes are defective and I have to throw them away. So she agreed to call in the RX and said, "I guess not having the disease I don't know about thee kind of things like defective needles." I thought that odd since she works in a specilaty office and sees all the horrors of RA and other auto immune diseases. hugs, marcia "

" I echo your and the others' outrage at the office staff, Mitzy. It's uncalled for, unprofessional and pretty much unethical, not to mention flat out rude. That's not nice, but do you know how the doctor felt? I certainly hope the staff's reaction wasn't reflective of the doctor's. We need these people on our side. I hate incompetence and rudeness, but when these people behave as though they feel they're above us and know better than we what's going on, it's just not right.

I wish you well on your claim, and hope the doctor will be supportive of you. I've had some issues with my PC doc, but at least he cares and is supportive of me, which goes a long way.

Best wishes,
doug "

" Mitzy, Noone should ever be treated in that manner. We used a sensativity training experiment in the emergency services class I used to teach. We put rice & corn in our students shoes, blindfolded them and put cotton in their ears. We then led them around the classroom - in a follow the leader style. They experianced what it is like to be so uncomfortable and frustrated. They realized that they had to look at the whole patient, not just what they could see. I wish we could use this training on all of the medical field...office staff also. "
