Redpixie and everyone, I was very impressed with "Emotional Therapy"....just loved the post!

I was hoping people could help out with "What not to Say" to someone with RA or another critical disease. My mom is somehow always pushing my buttons making me feel very frustrated with her. I am easygoing with her and simply get off the phone when she makes me angry...but I find the words she might say, emotionally stressful for hours and days at a time.

So what do people say to you and what have they said in the past that really bugs you?

Thanks so much to everyone for all your love and support! I love this site!
gentlehugs,

Sarah

" LOL, what haven't they said. My mother told me, "I had cancer when you were young, but I never showed you my pain".

I am fine with people's questions and support, but it is true that because they cannot SEE what you FEEL, the dumb comments spill out.

" I have a very unsupportive family who thinks it's all in my head.
"Stop thinking about it and it will go away"
"What now? Oh let me guess...you hurt?"
"You used to be so much fun, if you hide your pain better you wouldn't be such a drag"
"You created your issues yourself to get attention"

I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. No one in my family has this genetic disorder which is very odd. My grandma actually said she "wouldn't care if I died so long as she doesn't have to hear anymore excuses" (because disability from EDS and RA and FM are nothing but excuses) "

" Gosh Gumby,

I thought my family was bad. I am so sorry, for everyone here who has to deal with ignorant people. But, that is life, and if we manage it with eloquence, it will further build our character and strength, I believe that. Thank God, I have the most wonderful boss and co-workers who know when things are bad, and encourage me beyond belief.

" Bardinski I had the exact thing happen when I was diagnosed i told one of my best friends "Oh i think I have that too my knees hurt sometimes but i dont want to get tested"

"If you just change your diet"

Do any of you know someone that supposedly had RA and now they are fine thanks to there amazing diet? I do and everytime I see them theyre just like do this "Blah blah" and my family is always like well so and so is fine now...
I think diet is important but I dont think it will cure RA and i'm not sure if I believe that this person actually had it or maybe that had it mildly? I just hate that the only person know with RA was miraculously cured by diet and that everyone acts like i would be fine if i ate better. I dont eat that bad! "

" Is it any wonder you keep catching colds. When you keep saying over and over "it's my immunity, it's my immunity ... oh, my compromised immunity ...." of COURSE you're gonna get sick. You keep saying it, it's gonna happen!

Hm, so if I start some mantra about how good my immune system is, maybe I will never catch another cold, and hey my RA might even GO AWAY! Rrrrrrrrright. "

" I forgot how much I loved this post. Had my first Rheum Appt this week, kind of dissapointing just more tests after months of waiting. Anyways last night a good friend and I were talking. I am offered a higher position at our plant and am concerned that I will not be able to perform as well, I'm weak as a kitten when I was a lion before. He couldn't understand what my concern was. He asked "so now you went to the doctor you will be ok now because they can give you something to cure it right and you can go back to normal?!" I was like um no...

Unless you guys know a new miracle pill. Saw some on eBay...ridiculous! "

" "have you ever tried drugs x,y and z. What about homeopathic therapies, acupuncture, have you tried this magnetic braclet....."

I hate that people without RA offer me their magical solution to solving RA, as if i haven't considered every realistic and feasible option! "
