Methotrexate and liver enzymes

Hello everyone.

I am currently on 9 pills of 2.5mg methotrexate a week. I just got back from the Doc and she says my liver enzymes were elevated and I need to go back for another liver check on Monday.

She doesn't want to take me off methotrexate because she already see a lot of deformity in my hands.

Should I be concerned?

Anyone experience this with Methotrexate? I started on it in December and have not touched a drop of alcohol since.

Thanks in advance for your help!

" I went for a period of about 4 weeks with elevated liver enzymes, but that was a month after I stopped methotrexate for other reasons. Nobody knew why or seemed to care why, but me, because the high enzymes were stopping me from beginning a new drug. Finally, my wife discovered that 2 ingredients in an anti-biotic I was taking (bactrium) were on a list of ingredients that can cause high enzymes. Some anti-biotics, ibuprofen, tylenol, other drugs or supplements can all cause one or several enzymes to be higher than normal.

I'm sure your doc would recognize a dire situation. BTW, I had not had any alcohol for 2 months before the high enzymes, and never have showed any high enzymes during any period of drinking (glass of wine a day).

Good luck with the enzymes, and I hope the deformity thing is stopped. "

" Methotrexate is toxic to your liver, that is what the elevated enzymes mean. Is it the methotrexate or something else, who knows at this point. But because MTX is so damaging to the liver the doctors have to be extremely cautious when prescribing the drug. I have been on MTX for over 7 years and have never had high liver enzymes as a result, except in January when I was suffering from an awful stomach bug. Once I got better the liver enzymes went back to normal. The reason your doctor wants to retake the test is because they want to determine if the reading was a fluke or something to be concerned about. Hope everything turns out okay. Please keep us posted. Good luck ((hugs))marcia "
