Hello everyone! I'm new to this and was hoping to find information and to make some friends who understand what it's like living with Retinitis Pigmentosa. I'm a 39 year old single mom of two great kids. I was diagnosed inmy early 20's and became unable to drive when I was 33. It is devastating to one day have a job, be able to drive to work and drive your kids to practice and then one day have it all taken from you because you can no longer see weel enough to drive. My husband at the time ended up leaving and I moved from Texas back to my family home in Oklahoma and now live next to my parents on the family farm. I feel so isolated sometimess living in the country and not being able to drive. I have a few friends and my family is great and drives me wherever I need to go, but I miss being able to work and have a social life and be independent. I would love to talke to others and make some friends that know what it is like to live with this disease. Hope to hear from some of you. Thanks, Leslie

Hi Leslie, I'm also 39 I had to stop driving almost one year ago. Certainly a tough adjustment, I worked in the aviation industry and was put on disability. I'm trying to figure out my new life too.
I moved to an area where everything is close, beach, shops restaurants and a bus stop. I had never ridden public transportation before.... I'm used to it now, just makes grocery shopping tough. I don't have much of a social life. I really don't like going out at night, and I don't like crowded places even in the day. Lots of changes, makes me wonder who I am... I didn't mean to ramble. Welcome to DS:) Mike

Hi Leslie! Welcome! My name is Jill and I was diagnosed last fall at age 49...lost my license the day I saw the specialist and my job by Christmas. I hear ya about the rug being pulled out. I do believe that when one door closes another opens and there's a plan...not pretending to know WHAT plan necessarily..lol..but I'm willing to find out. This is a strange condition in some ways but I'm relieved to have some vision left and a family and friends who love me. I hope you find the encouragement and friendship you desire here and at home..great to be able to see you here! ; )
