I experienced by Retinal Detachment in early March 2009 and had a sceleral buckle procedure at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla. Unfotunately, my surgeon was not the best and rather condescending. I actually called him with a concern after my surgery and he asked me to relax and have a beer. Unfortunately, my suspicions came true, contrary to my doctor's beer comment, and I was back into surgery within a few days for a Vetrectomy. From that point on I have had severly distorted vision A few weeks ago I had an epimembrane peel via a new specialist at UC San Diego's Shiley Eye Center. While the procedure removed the membrane, it has done nothing to improve my distortion. I've had numerous second opinions and it appears that my fovia was damaged during my second surgery. Additionally, there is nothing that can be done to a damage fovia.
The moral of the story is - resist the urge to take the first surgeon available to fix your retinal detachment......only go to the best. Posted on 06/23/09, 07:06 pm |

Sundevil, I can completely identify with your situation.
I also had a scleral buckle surgery that was not successful and therefore had to have a vitrectomy as well, three weeks later (the day after you posted your story). Before the scleral buckle, I had the pneumatic retinopexy procedure, which was the same day that I walked in for the inital evaluation of my eye only to find out that it was not effective due to an undetectable tear. My vitreo-retinal surgeon is with Kaiser, and I had almost no time after he diagnosed my condition to do any research on such treatment or surgeons. It was so difficult, not to mention mind-boggling, to try and process everything presented to you in enough time to prepare for surgery for this urgently needed medical condition. They basically tell you that you need treatment ASAP...(which is for the most part true) so you feel like you have no other choice but to put your complete trust and future of your vision in their hands. I have been back and forth with so many feelings and thoughts about the whole experience. Just into my fourth week of recovery and vision is way blurry but can make out images and color. For now I guess the rest is just a waiting game.
