OK....I'm 56 years old....and all of a sudden in the last week or so I got this awful, weird tingling, crampy, electrical ......well you all know what I'm talking about....feeling in my legs when I went to bed.

Never in my life have I had anything like this.

So here is what changed in the last 2 weeks of my life.

1) Stopped taking Wellbrutin (taken to quit smoking)...too expensive, stopped suddenly (but was only on it 30 days) - so ...it is a withdrawal symptom.....so I refill the RX 5/30 .......legs gotten worse

2) Was on cabbage diet.....I'm fat.....got fat legs....LOL. Finished diet on Sat........legs gotten worse.

3) Started back at Y exercising (had been off a week). Monday leg lifted about 45 pounds by mistake....didn't realize it until I had done my 20 reps....legs gotten worse

So....in summary.....started suddenly about 2 weeks ago. Gotten worse. Took 2 benedryl last night to sleep....WHOOPS!!!!

Doctor Goggled it all night (have no insurance, depend of boards and Doc Goggle for advice/cures, etc)

Do I have RLS or something else??

~~~~bear
OH...PS...its still bothering me TODAY during the daylight hours....1st time that has happened.
Yikes! Be very careful with Benadryl; it can severely exacerbate RLS!
...
DRUGS WHICH ARE REPORTED TO LEAD TO OR AGGRAVATE RLS:
ANTIDEPRESSANTS: particularly the serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and tricyclics such as elavil(amitripyline) + paxil (paroxetine) and prozac (fluoxetine) have been reported to aggravate RLS symptoms in some.
PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS: i. e., haldol (haloperidol), risperdal (risperidone); chlorpromazine (thorazine), lithium *None of these drugs should be suddenly stopped without medical advice.
ANTIHISTAMINES: particularly benadryl or diphenhydramine can aggravate symptoms of RLS. A wide variety of over-the-counter medications for colds, hay fever, sinus, etc. will have benadryl or diphenhydramine in them. Yet, in others, it seems to help them sleep.
ANTI-NAUSEA DRUGS: such as Compazine, Phenergan, or any antinasuea drug crossing the brain barrier, probably all used in the U. S. can markedly exacerbate RLS symptoms.
Guess I will head for the store and get some Melatonin. "
" Thanks for the great info debbear....I have since found out I don't have RLS - it is something related to tx that has yet to be diagnosed but mcKenzie had it too for a couple years and it went away so that is what I'm hoping....in meantime I'll just have to live w/it.
It really was bad on trip to Reno cause I was busy everyday and didn't have time to take leg break...but so worth it.
I hope your is better.....thanks for hint tho regarless of RLS i've stopped bendryl as soon as you mentioned it because melotin works so much better, faster and is a natural chemical that I'm obviously missing....hope it works for you hun....xoxo "
" thanx for antihistamine info. I've been taking loratadine 10mg for quite a while to relieve symptoms of chronic ear infection (had a cold and flew very painfully into SEATAC and drove the infection into middle ear about 10 years ago). However, lately I've been reducing my dosage of Mirapex (which really works for RLS) and have started getting leg cramps and RLS earlier. I had attributed it to just reduced dosage but I'm going to stop the loratidine (which doesnt help much) and see what happens.
P.S. I posted on the "Advice" page but this "discussions" page seems to be the place to do it. Should I add my "Advice" query here? "
" Hyderkat.....not sure about the "advice" section.......I guess it couldn't hurt to re post it here.
Once I stopped the antihistamines it seemed to pretty much go away.....THEN.....last week after being off my feet for 5 months, I went back to work.
Oh My Gawd......I worked 2 - 12 hour days (Sat & Sun) on Sunday night the electric shocks going through my legs were so intense I thought I could KILL!!! (poor hubby.....LOL)
Got up.....checked with Doc Google, typed in "electric shocks in legs" (previously I had always typed in "pain in legs") ........this time the top several links lead me to Spine problems, herniated disc's etc.
Monday morning I went to my Chiropractor (which I haven't seen since Dec).....wow was I out of whack!!!....He pushed, shoved, crunched, cracked.....and all those good things they do.
Monday night I slept like a baby:) Tuesday night, my head felt like maybe those shocks were trying to sneak back in.....so I went back today.
He charges $30 a "pop", he's open Mon, Wed, Friday.....and if it helps.....I will beg, borrow, steal to keep going.
I just hate taking pills that don't "cure" the problem, but instead mask the symptoms. "
