With a terminal diagnosis, what exactly is meant when you hear "It's time to get your affairs in order"? How does one go about this? What needs to be done?

I'd think it means (among other things:
-Be right with God -Tell your friends and family how much they mean to you -Make sure there are no hard or bitter feelings between yo and anyone -Be sure you Will is accurate and up to date -Settle your finances and personal items. In short, be ready to die, as odd as that may sound (few people are ever ready to die!!) Perhaps another way to say is is this: If you could look down at "your world" after you die, make sure that there is NOTHING of which you'd say "I SO much wish, before I died, that I'd.............. (whatever). Dunno if that helps, but that's what the term means to me. And I have studied on it in depth lately.

Dear kkzimm,
One year ago tomorrow, my sister died. She was a lovely, healthy mother of two. Her death was unexpected and shockingly sudden. Just sitting and talking with her daughter, her heart stopped and in an instant, her life was over. When I think about the years my husband has lived with his terminal diagnosis, I would never say this long term suffering and worry was a blessing. But, after having my sister ripped from our lives in a second, I can see that my husband and I are truly blessed. We can have time to do exactly what TnYank has mentioned above. Bless you and your husband. Love, Linda

Thanks for the feedback, and Linda, thanks for the perspective. I must remember that my hubby's life is in God's hands, and only He knows the number of his days. I am learning to live each day as it comes and to be thankful for the days that we have together. - Karen

Difficult to hear these words, I'm sure.
To TnYank's list, I'd add that some kind of directive is needed on resusitation. I don't know what the official name is, but it applies to how and whether to use breathing and feeding tubes and to exercising heroic measures. If these are words you've heard lately, I pray for God's strength, comfort and wisdom. You are right that your hubby's life is in God's hands. The way I've reconciled it is that I know that God loves me and will deal righteously with me concerning my length of days.
