Symptoms of RCC?

My Dad is awaiting a diagnosis that his dr expects will be RCC - Dad had an angiogram a couple weeks ago that spotted a 47mm x 57mm tumor on a kidney. Now he's had additional CTs & been referred to a urologist.
Will a urologist be able to answer questions about RCC? Dad's been having pain in his lower back for about 2 years now. He usually thought it was a UTI or kidney infection & has had several rounds of antibiotics to treat it but it never went completely away. Over the last several months, in addition to the back pain, he's had a burning sensation in his legs - he says it's his skin burning, like pepper juice was rubbed on his legs. His feet hurt if he stands or walks for very long (30+ minutes). He has burning in his bladder that wakes him up several times a night. He's complained that his skin itches a lot. He also has a sore on the skin of his backside, sometimes makes it hard to sit comfortably, he thought it was something like a boil but it's been there for many months. Are any of these symptoms especially concerning or something the dr will need to know about? This sounds like a very dispassionate recitation of symptoms, but actually I am very scared of what the CTs will show. Thanks. Liz Posted on 10/03/09, 08:10 am |

Liz, first of all I sm sorry for your Dad's illness and pain. It is frightening and I offer a hug and prayer to you both. There are folks here that can answer better than I on that, but there are reputable links on the Web about RCC. I will tell you that from my perrsonal experience the Kidney Cancer association has a Live Chat with medical folks that is top notch!!! I mean phenominal! Start there and they will give you sone guidance, some are survivors themselves , all are advocates on getting the word about how to fight RCC and mRCC.
I attend KCA webinars and these are extremely informative.Try to rest and keep up with your health as much as possible! Bless you, Hunter www.kidneycancerassociation.org

Hi Liz,
My husband had a right nephrectomy in 2007. They thought that the tumor in that kidney was confined. He had no more problems, until a routine scan this past March showed mets in both lungs. I can totally relate to your stress and fears. Itching is a common problem with kidney problems. I'm not sure about what you describe with your dad's legs and bladder. DEFINITELY tell the urologist EVERYTHING...no matter how insignificant it may seem. The more information he has, the better equipped he'll be to diagnose the problems. Should your dad require a nephrectomy, please know that they are done very often now. My husband had a very easy recovery from his. Also, there are many good drugs for MRCC...so there is alot of hope. I'm sorry that your dad is going through this. Being ill is very hard on him and all that love and care for him. Please take time to care for yourself, Hon. Like Hunter said, there are many very knowledgeable people here on the DS site. We are a very special family, and welcome you! Hang in there. I'm here whenever you need a friend. Love, Ingrid

I have burning and pain in my legs and feet. It feels like i am standing on bones with no meat under them. I have lots of cramps in my feet too.. The Dr. says I have Neuropathy. I am having a EMG test next week to determine how bad it is etc. I had kidney cancer and they removed a tumor on the tube into the kidney and 1/2 of my right kidney last Nov. Good luck with everything.

My husband was just diagnosed with RCC in August. Some of the symptoms he had was pain in his left flank, fever off and on, nausea and vomittin off and on, and he had a lump in his testicles. It was by a CT with contrast that we found out what was going on. Then, they had to remove his kidney. However, it was too late it had already spread to his lungs and all his lymph nodes. I can tell you that the pain in his legs sounds like neuropathy. I can't say for sure but I don't think that it is related to RCC. I will keep you in my prayers as well as your family. Please do check out the Kidney Cancer Association website. They have some great information for you that I found very helpful. God Bless you Hunter. Beca

My husband was diagnosed with RCC in Oct of 2006. His only symptoms were pain in his right lower back area that had been going on for quite sometime. Nothing showed up on blood test, urine tests, etc. Finally the pain got so severe that he thought possibly he had some broken ribs or something - they did an MRI and found a very large mass in his rib area. The only other symptoms that he experienced was being tired all the time.
Good luck with your father - and god bless you.
