Post-surgery check ups

Hi,
In Feb this year I had my left kidney with a 7 cm tumor removed. It was discovered by accident, when checking for gall bladder/stones related problems. Afer surgery no other treatments were neccessary, my last week CT-scan and X-ray looked normal, and I feel pretty good right now.
Can anyone tell what a 'normal' check-up schedule looks like, if they experienced any long term effects from a kidney removal, and what kind of symptoms tell you things are wrong (again)? I don't recall anything that was hinting towards a kidney tumor, yet I had this big thing growing inside me. Thank God for the gall stones, and they pain they caused, otherwise I wold have been in a lot worse shape half a year from now.

" Hi Leanne - I'm a bit behind you as I just had my left kidney and a 4 cm tumour removed June 12 - same as you = we were checking for a gall bladder or some kind of stomach issue = lots of upset, indegestion- just uncomfortable. So I'm no help on post surgery routine - how are your stomach issues now? My surgeon says they were not related to the kidney cancer - but I just wonder? "

" Hi Poirier,
A week before the kidney surgery my gall bladder and gall stones were removed (and so I have 2 7inch scars on my belly..), that took care of the stomach area pain. I used to have heartburn every now and then, but I'm wondering now if that was actually gall stone related as well. The only stomach issue I had after surgery was a very poor tolerance for pain killers.
How are you feeling since surgery?? Are you able to do little thinsg in the house yet, or some really short walks? Are you enjoying eating yet? Hope things are going well. "

" I too wonder about follow up. I was told I need to have a 3 mo. and then at least yearly or 6 month scans and blood checks. I am going to call the Dr and ask to be sure.
Good Luck!!

" Hi Leanne46, I had a chest scan done, (clean), a bone scan was thought about, and I just had another CT 2 days ago. My next CT is in Oct of this year. The scheduled post op CT was for Oct only, but because of other issues with my health, they gave me one beforehand, but it wasn't targeted for my kidneys. My medical doctor friend advised me that when they do the CT's in his words he said "they are biting off nephrons", so he didn't want me to have CT's like they are going out of style. If you have any questions about followups...and there SHOULD be some sort, somewhere down the line, the first line of questioning is with your docs. You sound like a champion, and God bless you and keep you healthy.Hugs, Hunter "

" Hi,
November of 07 was my surgrey date and in Dec of 08 they did the C/T scan with contrast because I cannot tolorate the MRI. The contrast is very bad for my rmaining kedney so they put me in the hospital a day before and hydrated me with IV before the scan and then the day after the scan they tested to make sure the contrast solultion was gone and my remaining kidney was funcioning as it should.
I am sure I will go through this procedure once a year for the rest of my life, which is just fine with me.
Good Luck
Don "

" Thank you Lenny, Lone Wolfe, and Wooddon,

It's so good to hear from others! It sounds like each one of you is in a regular check up phase, and I hope and pray things will stay well. My next check is in October, and after that may a 6 months later. I will never again take my health for granted! I'm starting to forget already how hard it was right after my surgeries, I really want to stay grateful for every day I fell well. "

" Hi Leanne - I'm doing well - went back to work today - I'll just go in for the mornings this week. I'm a self employed accountant - so probably better off there then at home vacuming and doing laundry! My head was groggy tho - but I've been off since June 11 so I guess that's expected. Yes, am doing short walks a couple of times a day AND short naps! ( luv them) My left side from the bottom rib down has a definite someone kicked me hard feeling but a couple of Tylenol seem to do the trip. I don't go for my post op until Aug 25 so I guess I'll get my follow up schedule then. Take care. Poirier "
