I had a successful kidney removal 2 weeks ago and had my follow-up appt with a nepheologist yesterday. She commented on my high creatinine level. It is causing my kidney to be functioning at a 61% level. She has me doing further urine test to see if we need to be concerned about it. My question is should I be concerned about it now. When she said my kidney was functioning at 61% I got concerned. She did say that could be because I have only 1 kidney now. Anyone else experienced this? I am a little concerned.

Do not be concerned about it now - you are fresh out of surgery and still recovering. The nephrologist should be well versed in the kidney function tests of one who has just one working kidney. Things need some time to settle down.
What IS your creatinine level at now? My husband (61 w/1kidney ) is at 1.8, which is higher than what is considered 'normal' but not one of his doctors seem surprised or concerned at all. So if they're not concerned, we are not concerned either. Good luck to you! glors

Hello!
I don't think you need to be too concerned about 61% function. My husband only has 20% function in his one kidney, and is doing okay. Of course, the nephrologist keeps a close eye on him. Since his problem is from damage from chemo...there isn't anything that can be done to improve it. His creatinine level went up to 6.8 (10% function), while in the hospital in July. It's now 3.2. Hang in there. Please know that I'm here for you. Love, Ingrid

Don't worry about the percentage right now. I was a dialysis nurse for six years before I went to OB. I can tell you, that since you just had surgery, this is normal. It will take some time for your body to adjust. Your Dr will need to monitor your levels frequently. I'm not sure how often you get blood work done by your Dr. My husband gets his done every two weeks right now. They always check his WBC and his creatine. They told us that they may have to check it weekly for a while. I really wouldn't worry about it right now. Let the Dr keep a check on it, and you give your worries to God. I know during this time of struggle, its hard. Trust in him and let him take care of you. Remember "Footprints in the Sand", he is carrying you during this rough time. I will say an extra prayer for you! Love you! Beca
