I was recently diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, have a 6.6cm tumor on my left kidney, scheduled for nephrectomy on March 30th. The dr tells me it has not spread beyond that, but that even with the nephrectomy there will still be millions and millions of cancer cells in my bloodstream and hopefully they will all die off. But I have read so much on the internet about having a five year life term after a nephrectomy. Can anyone help with this? Has anyone lived longer? Is there really only five years if I'm lucky? I know sometimes the doctors won't always tell you everything. I want the facts. I want the truth. Can anyone help? Thanks.

" Hi Renee'
I am a 13yr survivor of RCC. Had my right kidney removed in 96. it had invaded my IVC. I had 7yrs free. 2003 a 6cm tumor appeared in my left lung It was removed by wedge resection. Another 6yrs free. Now I am showing 2 small tumors 1 in left lung and 1 in the right. Only 13mm each. Waiting to see if they are going to operate on them as well. So as to your Question Yes you can live beyond 5yrs. I wish you all the best and a healthy life.

" Just like you I had my left kidney removed march 7 2008. Its been a year and in June I go in for my next check-up. I do good until right before my check-up then I start thinking about the results. If I only have 5 years then I am going to live it to the fullest I can. I have come down with a lot of health problems since my kidney removal, but I got to work every day (2 jobs - mental health counslor and also an assoc. pastor). Take care of the house, go camping, play with the grand kids, etc. Dont get me wrong I do have days where it gets me down, but I dont have the time to wonder when the end is going to come, I have made it a decision to live every day to the fullest that I can, that I gave it my most.
