hello friends!
i wanted to let everyone know that there is an article in the current People Magazine about RSD, ketamine and comas. i was so surprised to see it, but there it was! the title was 'this man CHOSE to be in a COMA,' and it was about a man who opted, after years and years of RSD-related pain, to go into a five day ketamine induced coma. it explained what RSD was, what ketamine was and what it could do, and how the whole thing worked. it also gave a few more examples of other RSD patients who also chose ketamine comas, and the outcomes of all of them. it was two or three pages long (i can't remember, even though i only read it an hour ago -sheesh!), and very well written. i can only hope that people will not only read this article but *remember* it, so the next time i say i have RSD, someone might know of the name - and maybe have an inkling as to the extent of the pain, too. wouldn't that be great? go get your copy, and please let me know what you think! xoxo, misa Posted on 08/04/09, 03:08 am |

I will look for it tomorrow ( or today as the case may be it's really early in the morning). It would be nice if someone had even a fleeting thought of having heard of RSD. So far everyone around me has never heard of it, and several times people have commented that if it's that bad you would think people would have heard. Guess they think I am exagerating or something, don't really know or care, but have noticed it's hardly known to anyone!
I have been researching the ketamine thing, both the coma and the low dose trials, wondering if they really would work? Anyway, I will get the copy then we can chat about it! gentle hugs, MM

Thank you for the great info. I picked up a copy of People today. I had never heard of using ketamine as a therapy for rsd. It is good for a mainstream magazine to publish a article about rsd and raise awareness about this mostly unheard of condition. Before I developed rsd I had never heard of it or even knew that it existed. Thanks again.

I tried to find this article in people magazine but in all the people magazines I found on the stands I could not find it. We found people exclusive with feria fawcett on cover, people country, people style, people espaniol, people remember's michael jackson, people remembers the 70's, sigh no plain people magazine, and in all those mentioned I could not find the article. Help? What magazine am I looking for? But sadly there is an article about a child who stoped growing/maturing at 6 mos old, and is now a 16 year old, in the people exclusive one. I found that one very sad.
Anyway, help getting the article would be appreciated, and maybe what's on the cover?

i'm sorry, i should have specified *which* PEOPLE it was! it's the one with the cast of 'saved by the bell' on the cover ... which is actually what made me want it, lol. i'm almost 30, so that was a *big* hit when i was younger, ha ha!
mountain mom: i can tell you from experience that ketamine DOES work - at least for me it does! i am fortunate enough to have a pain doctor who works with it, believes in it, and started me on a regiment of it very early on after seeing me. i have a tumor in my spine along with addison's disease (and HORRID abdominal pain from it). addison's disease, in case you're not familiar, is an adrenal disease where your body isn't capable of making enough cortisol - our body's most important adrenalin. cortisol regulates about a million things, and one of them is sending messages to the brain to heal pain. bc i don't have enough, i definately don't have extra, so when my pain from my tumor AND my RSD kicks in, i. sometimes. want. to. die. it's NO good. THIS is where the ketamine comes in! i used to only get ketamine treatments; now i get blocks or epidurals WITH the treatments. before i found the pain doctor i have now and she started the treatments, i spent so much time in the ER that it wasn't even funny. sometimes 2-3 times a week i would have to go in, the pain was SO awful. if i wasn't in the ER, i was in the hospital. one september i was in the ENTIRE month - it was not good. but with the ketamine treatments, the visits and stays became fewer and fewer, and now i'm proud to say that i was just hospitalized for the first time in over 2 yrs (and to be honest, they could have let me go, they were just being over-precautions). at one point we talked about the 5-day ketamine coma, but instead opted for a 4-hour continuous drip, which basically worked magic for me. i could go on for another hour here, but the bottom line is that it's great! it is SO worth trying, in my opinion, and if you have any questions, or want to talk about it, know what it's like, etc., feel free to message me! in the meantime, i hope you find the article - if not, let me know and i can type it out for everyone on the board. have a great sunday! xoxo, misa

Thanks for letting us know about the article in People. It was a good article. Just hope I dont get that much pain. The days that RSD is really bad is enough to send one over the edge--worse then that-WOW. I would be wishing to die, as I do some times on the BAD days.
Hope everyone is doing as well.
