i'm so sick of this. between being raped twice in the last three years, and having a major car accident within the last year, my ptsd is really bad. and yesterday i had a fender bender and the guy took off, but it scuffed up my car and i jammed my foot (which was on the brake). and i still have to drive around. so now i'm jumpy even when i SEE people coming. or when I SEE my keys fall or something. I'm startled by EVERYTHING even if it's nothing spontaneous. it's something I see coming. And I'm tired of nightmares. And I'm tired of having injuries.
why cant I just LIVE? this isn't fair. Posted on 07/01/09, 04:07 pm |

As you become stronger and feel empowered your nightmares will change. The last time a nightmare tried to scare me, I dreamt a man was in my kitchen, he reached into the drawer and pulled out a knife to use on my children and I. I turned to him, told him what I'd do to him, and the dream ended. Listen to your dreams. They represent how you feel.
Take a self defense class, privately if necessary. Work out your upper body in the gym. Think about why you feel weak, and do something positive about it. What can you do to feel stronger and empowered. (legally)

I can't change my nightmares, or take control in them or anything. I've always had nightmares. I don't remember my childhood, but I remember that I had nightmares a lot. I get them few times a week.
I don't have the funds to take a self defense class, and I'd want it to be private if I did.

As a kid, sometimes I'd be afraid of going to sleep and having another nightmare. I didn't get too many of them, but when I did, they'd really bug me. So I'd always have some anxiety at bedtime. I was maybe 7 or 8. So one night I thought I'd try something. Before going to sleep, I told myself I'm not going to have a nightmare tonight. And by golly it worked. Something about being conscious of your own fears helps get rid of them. I don't know if that makes sense.

I know the only thing that made my nightmares go away was simply not giving them any glory. Like, I'd wake up from one, take a deep breath and go about my day and just push the nightmare out of my head. Not letting it phase me, I guess. But traumas made them come back. And pushing them out of my head doesn't work anymore. I can have a great day with few triggers and get nightmares that startle me awake and ruin the next day.
