Our DS Profiles are on Google

I just found out reading a post in another DS room that our DS profiles and journals (if open to everybody) can be Googled and brought up on the internet for EVERYONE IN THE WORLD to see and read. Now, I don't know about you'all, but I never signed up for that and I'm madder than @#$%! Your Profile has a lot of information on it, pictures, hug book, goals. My journal does not show up on the google list, but it is available if you pull up my profile.
What a shame. I was beginning to open up and feel really comfortable here at DS. I recently put a picture of little old me and a picture of my first granddaughter for all to see (if they cared). I've even started writing in my journal because I had no where else to turn to, Now this. You'all try googling by your DS Screen name. And what do you all think? Laurie Posted on 06/25/09, 08:06 am |

Thanks Laurie for this info. I'm really shocked too although my journal and photos are only open to friends but all the hugbook is there! The only consolation is that my DS name isn't really known to anyone else but you're right - we never signed up to let the world know our innermost thoughts did we?

I sent a copy the above post to DS. They closed the report with the following post. All I can say is be careful what you say and use the existing security measures for journal entries and your picturesAlways click on the button (for my friends only) whenever given the choice. Laurie
A note about Google and DailyStrength: Thank you for writing. Journals are, by default, available to anyone who visits DS. They can be hidden, of course, but all content is public on DS. The thing to remember is that members are supposed to be anonymous; not giving their real names, phone numbers, etc. will protect them from their DS ID being tracked back to them personally. We believe there are pros and cons on both sides of the Google search argument. YES, we can theoretically block Google from finding user profiles...but it also prevents people from finding much of the value that you all are posting to the site. Many, many folks come to DS because they do a search for a disease or treatment and then find our wonderful site. On the other hand, we understand that many folks use the same ID for multiple sites, and you want to do anything you can to keep your private thoughts, well, more private than we're currently offering. However, our programmers are hard at work at creating privacy options and other features that can help address this issue. We'll be glad to change your username to something less identifiable if that's a big issue for you, and you can also remove any items of concern (hometown, etc) from your profile by yourself. Also, you can use our privacy options on your journal to “lock” it for either just yourself or your friends to view. For more guidance on how to use our journal privacy please see our help pages. Thanks, DailyStrength Support . The post they sent follows:
