The results of my lung biopsy at U of C came back indicating HP, with a differential diagnosis of Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia. The local pulmonologist started me Monday on 60 Mg of Prednisone daily--and have been on oxygen since Aug. 4 (the day before my lung biopsy). My cough has been better since the O2, but my pulse ox drops to low 80's or even lower when I try to do a walk test without oxygen. Don't feel that I'm seeing much improvement, even though I've only been on the meds since Monday.

If anyone out there has either of these diseases and can share any information (like if they told you what stage you are, how they treated, how you responded, etc.), how you were tested for anitgens, how you tested your home (we've tested for molds and had a Maytag frontloader washer removed and the furnace people are coming in the morning to take out the 2 year old Humidifier they installed that has mold in it--and I am allergic to mold and dus) PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Thanks and blessing to all of us and our families and friends. Kauailover

" I was diagnosed with HP last June after a lung biopsy in which I was very sick after the procedure. I ended up in a ventilator and in the hospital for 2 weeks. They gave me high doses of steroids and I went home on O2 and daily doses of 80mg of Prednisone. I have weaned off of O2 after 3 months and now on 8mg of Prednisone. It has been a very slow recovery. However looking back on how I was after I was discharged from the hospital and what I am able to do now, I have made improvements. Before the biopsy, I had bloodwork and bronchoscopy done which was inconclusive for HP. I had 2 birds at home for almost 9 years and is believed to be the culprit of my disease. I got rid of the birds last March when my condition was not improving. They intitially thought it was just pneumonia and antibiotics did not help. My chest xray, CT scans and symptoms were getting worse, and the lung biopsy was done. My pulmonologist is also sending me to UofC (what a coincidence) for a second opinion since my last chest xray in August did not improve and my coughing and shortness of breath is still persistent. Hope that there has been some improvement in your condition since you posted this. What is your plan of care? "
