My doctor prescribed 1 liter at night and 4 liters during the day. I have since increased my nightly dose to 2 liters. Doing this appears to have helped me sleep better at night.

This is something that should be throughly discussed with the doctor. After you are comfortable with the terminology, effects, and how the body reacts, then you can judge a little better about your level of need.
Currently I use 2.5 liters at night and none during the day unless I feel that I need it. If the need changes too much, I will be having another discussion with the doctor.
