Enlarged Left Atrium

Well things haave been going pretty good for me, 5 months out now and for the most part feeling much better. Still having chest pain, light headed and very fatigued. My cardiologist did another echo cardiogram and found that my left heart is severly enlarged. The right side is only mildly enlarged casued by the high pressure of pushing blood through the clots in the lungs. Not sure what is going on now on the left side. Anybody experience that? I am calling my Dr. daily for an explanation, but it must not be too serious or she would return the call. My next appointment isn't until 12/19. There goes the anxiety again. Hate the not knowing. Thanks for any comments. Take care.

" I think I'm having some sympathetic anxiety now. I never even thought about this as a side effect of having a PE. Do you they know why it happened to you? In my unprofessional opinion, I'd think this may be caused from having clots for a while. Or is it possible for your heart to become enlarged over a couple days?

Hopefully you are right and this kind of thing is not too serious. All the same I'm going to be asking my doctor about this issue, too. "

" Good questions bishop9. Thanks for the response. I had an echo 6 weeks ago and my PCP said everything looked normal! So does that mean this is new and in a very short period of time? Or perhaps they missed it and it is the result of having clots for a very long time? Don't know and hope the cardiologist will call me Monday. It is so annoying not knowing. TAke care and let me know what your Dr. says. "

" Hi, Richard. I'm sorry you're going through an additional anxiety-producing chapter in your illness. I haven't heard of left atrium issues connected with PE. I know the right side of the heart is usually strained and sometimes enlarged. I had this problem, but it resolved itself. I hope you can get some information that will put your mind at ease before your appointment in December. Just the stress of uncertainty is enough to make you sick. Try and get some answers over the phone--I think it's very inconsiderate of your doctor not to get back to you. Keep bugging him. You deserve an answer. "
