I am debating whether to get this..I did get the seasonal flu shot a couple weeks ago and called my Pulmonary Doc and asked to relay a msg to him asking if he thought I should go and get the H1N1 since I have PE...his nurse called me back after talking with him and told me he said he did not think I was at a higher risk from complications from the virus but that I could get it if I wanted to. My wife is 15 weeks pregnant and is dead-set against getting due to the vaccine not having been tested or ht newness of it. I feel otherwise but she was already a 51% majority holder in our relationship - now that she is pregnant, she is about 70%. Or so it seems. =) I would prefer that she get it but she does not want to take the risk. I do have a couple of questions..I have to get my PT/INR tomorrow so I am going to ask these questions there also.

1. If I want to get the H1N1 vaccine, am I considered a "priority" due to my PE? I was diagnosed with 4 clots in my lungs and 2 in my calf about 7 weeks ago.

2. If so, what exactly do you have to get the vaccination? Do I call my GP to get it or some other type specialty clinic and will I have to show a note from my doc or something?

What if my doc does not agree that I am a priority case due to the PE? I have read in several threads here that we are considered eligible due to the PE but can this vary from Dr to DR? I would hate to want to get it due to my PE and also to not have to worry about giving it to my pregnant wife, only to find out my doc won't give me a note or form I might need.

My office has had 3 outbreaks of H1N1 and we only have 25 or so people on the place where we work. Once I found this out on Monday I let them know I would be working from home this week.

Thanks for any advice or insight.

Brian

" They cannot refuse you the vaccine by saying you are not high risk. Only you know if you are high risk or not. There is a huge liability if they say you aren't high risk and refuse the vaccine then have something happen to you and another doctor come along and say you were high risk. "

" Where I live, the town have set up clinics that run from noon-8pm everyday. Also, some family doctors received shipments, but not all. Mine did ;)

The clinics here (Ontario, Canada) you just line up and bring your health card. For my doctors office, I'm making an appointment to see the nurse. "

" Got my H1N1 shot yesterday, I was in the group of "people who care for someone under the age of 6 months" so that is the only reason I was able to get it, not even due to the fact I am prone to clots. "

" You are definately elibigle for the vaccine. I would call up your doctor and ask how to get it.

If you don't have success, call up the local health dept., say you have a pregnant wife at home, and in a priority group, ask if they have available.

The good news is you did the right thing by staying home. At my son's school, three or four weeks ago six children out of a class of fifteen had it. It spread fast. We stayed home maybe one or two weeks. I called up to ask if kids were still getting sick. Once things calmed down I sent him back. He gets the mist tomorrow...

Good luck..

" My doctor told me that people with PE are considered high risk patients. I asked him if I needed a signed doctor's note and he told me I didn't. I just needed to tell them that I had the pulmonary embolisms and that would be enough to be in the high risk group. He says it is a respiratory flu and didn't think my lungs would be strong enough to fight it. My clots are gone and showed no damage done to my lungs but said I was still considered a high risk. Good luck and remember you have to take care of yourself and this has to be your decision. All I know is I am having it done as soon as the clinics open where we live. I just lost a cousin last week that tested positive for H1N1 and it was a blood clot that took her in the end. Take care! "

" I got my H1N1 shot yesterday. I was considered a second tier priority. I was unsure and wouldn't have taken it, but based on some of the info and possible complications from catching the virsus, I didn't want to take the chance. "

" I got my H1N1 shot this morning. After long and intense discussions, we wife decided to get it also...she is 15.5 weeks pregnant and was worried about the mercury and also the fact that it just has not been tested. Our OB/GYN highly recommended it and their office had single dose shots which had no thermsol (sp?). I wonder how long it takes before it gets in your system and you are truly immune to it...anyone know? Thanks again for the responses.
