Latest info on the H1N1 vaccine

OK, I went to get my H1N1 vaccination. Mind you this is the first batch of the live virus that is inhaled through the nose. It states right on the information paperwork not intended for anyone with respiratory problems including but not limited to asthma, copd, pulmonary embolisms, High blood pressure, etc I can't remember the other ailments it listed, so ultimately I don't qualify to get the inhaled vaccine. I also don't qualify for the inhaled vaccine because I am over 49 years of age. They recommend we do get the vaccination but wait for the killed injectable vaccine. With this said my own personal doctor told me that as long as I get the regular flu shot even if I do get the swine flu I wont get it as severe as I would not having a flu shot at all. I still intend on getting my H1N1 vaccine to protect myself and my family. Remember even if you don't get the flu you could be a carrier. Practice good hand washing, and cover you cough and sneezes with the arm and not the hand. Carry hand sanitizer with you so you can wash your hands frequently and by all means if you feel sick stay home! It is recommended that if you do get the flu not to return to work until you can go at least 24 hours without a fever and not be taking anything to reduce the temperature.

I also plan to avoid all those little germ-machines that'll be trick or treating this Saturday....but what to do with all this candy? Hmmmm....
Maybe I'll just hand out little sample bottles of Purell this year! Really, I'm starting to feel a bit Howard Hughes-ish these days with my hand washing. The local grocery store provides Sani Cloth wipes at the door to wipe down carts - I grab a bunch and wipe down my groceries too. In Minnesota the H1N1 vaccine distribution is such a fluster cluck that avoidance is all I can really hope for. By the time I'm deemed eligible for it, H1N1 will have mutated into something completely different, I'm sure. Thanks for the heads up on the nose dose Ferr!

Thanks for the info Ferr. I haven't heard anything about the inhaled vaccine in the UK but have been told that I will get a letter from my GP when the swine flu shot is available.
I had the basic flu jab and the pneumonia jab this afternoon - one in each arm - and both my arms are sore and aching now! Must have got a sadistic nurse this time !!! Don't think I'll be able to lie on my side - might have to sleep on my back and snore tonight!! Love S xx

LauraLu,
It's the same situation in Milwaukee. Total craziness at these "clinic" sites that they've set up and now they're shutting them down because there are not enough vaccines. I don't get why they don't have a day where they give the shots to kids at their school. That way, you inoculate all those germy, rug rats, who seem to be the most susceptible to H1N1 anyway, and maybe that would prevent the spread. I got my regular flu shot today but probably will forego the H1N1. And I'm someone who's in a risk group because I'm on immunosuppressent drugs for another condition. I also take public transportation to and from work, so who knows what germs abound there. But I'd rather risk it than deal with the circus atmosphere right now.

LOL I work in a hospital in an ICU unit where I see a lot of people in isolation for H1N1, MRSA and many other Bugs. As a matter of fact I came down with a bug last week and went into minor care, the Doctor said considering where I work he wasn't going to swab me for anything because I would probably come back positive for everything, from staph to swine flu. I still can't stress enough the importance of good hand washing and staying home if your sick.
Stay well all of you. HUGS and Luv Ferr

I actually got the H1N1 shot yesterday because I am in a high risk group (someone who cares for child under 6 months), got it right at my dr's office, me and my husband both.

Guess it was inevitable it would happen. Five kids at the local high school came down with confirmed cases. One of the parents of those kids work at the middle School. My son was diagnosed with H1N1 today. I had gone to wake him up for school and could here him breathing oddly. Had a hard time getting him up. He complained he couldn't breath, it hurt when he coughed and swallowed, and upon taking his temperature it was high. My wife took him to the hospital who diagnosed him.
Guess while my daughter and wife head out Trick or Treating tomorrow night I will be settling in to watch some scary movies and taking care of my son (darn, will have to put my "Sponge Bob" Costume away for another year). Hopefully the rest of us remain flu clear. The season flu is bad enough but the respiratory issues associated with H1N1 are just plain Baaaaadddd. Regards, Tom

mamiof6,
Thanks! He doing really well. Other then initial breathing problems, it's really not too much different in symptoms from the regular flu. No one else in the house had caught it (were at day 4 now) . Hadn't been as bad as I envisioned it (same thing the hospital relayed to us when we were talking to them about it). I think a lot more people have had it and didn't go to the doctors. I think it would definitely be worth getting the shot just to avoid dealing with the symptoms. It hasn't been available in our local area (been recalled - something which also concerns me).

Laura,
I think you are eligible for a h1n1 vaccine if you want one. I am because of the blood clotting disorder which would put you in a priority group of getting the shot. Mamio of six, That is so reassuring that your one year old pulled through fine. I am worried about my fifteen month old contracting the virus. Did he take Tamiflu? Tom, I hope your son is feeling okay. I am glad no one else got it.
