Hi all,
I've now been off of warfarin for over 4 months (had a PE discovered on May 1, 2008---took warfarin for 10 months....all testing came back negative...was on bc Yaz before PE was discovered). Anyways....my hematologist tested my d-dimer before I went off (was below detectable .22)..my lab uses the test where .22 or below is nondetectable...d-dimer is not a concern until over .5 (I know there are some false positives, but there is also a lot of research showing benefits to d-dimer test). After one month off, my hematologist took my d-dimer again...still at .22 (this was huge as a much lower recurrence of clots is seen when it is still low after one month off...I was ecstatic!). I requested monthly d-dimers for the first year (hematolgist said that was fine). I just wanted to keep track of where I was serotologically. Second month off I was at .43, third test was at .34. I was at this time taking one fish oil packet a day (along with my daily glass of wine and piece of dark chocolate (very good medicine, in my opinion :). I take a good kind...Coromega...comes in packets and is an orange cream (is 2 grams in a serving)..and is distilled so doesn't have the toxins. Anyways...I decided to experiment with taking two packets a day (one in the morning and one later in the day...for 4grams of fish oil per day). My first d-dimer after doing this was .24. I just got the results of the d-dimer that I took this month...and it is non-detectable....less than the .22). I really believe that it is the fish oil..I am just amazed. Also....I've always been pretty happy, but feel like I've been taking happy pills lately....much better moods! I know there is a lot of research about this out there....which is why I chose to take this after discontinuing warfarin. My question...I just want to make sure that I am not taking too much fish oil...I want to experiment with taking it twice a day maybe 3 or 4 times a week rather than every day? Has anybody found a lot of benefit in taking this supplementation after discontinuing warfarin? I am really excited that this may be working...and wanted to pass this on to people that may be stopping their warfarin in the near future. I am just trying to make sure that I am not taking too much fish oil...so anyone in the know out there...please pass on advice. I know they say 2 mg per day (but I guess that is because of the concern of toxins in the fish oil..and the kind I am taking is really good stuff). I've been researching the web and am finding recommendations anywhere from 2g to 5g per day. Sorry to be so long-winded :) Appreciate any feedback! Take care, Nancy Posted on 07/02/09, 02:07 pm |

Hi Nancy, I'm sure someone will be quick to correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the only worry in terms of too much fish oil was the possibility of mercury contamination, so if what you're taking is distilled and toxin-free, I wouldn't think that there should be any problems. And congratulations on finding something that you feel comfortable and happy with as a preventative measure. I hope for your continued good health!

Nancy,
Most benefits that I know of, and no I don't know everything, in regards to Fish Oil (Omega-3) pertain to arterial (heart disease, atherosclerotic plaques. It does increase your bleeding risks much like the effects of aspirin or IBUPROFEN, if taken in large quantities. I'm not a big fan of the d-Dimer so can't comment beyond what is advertised: http://www.fvleiden.org/ask/19.html Here is some evidenced based information from the National Institute of Health (NIH): http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus... The same link also provides a recommend dosage.

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice and comments Shilo and Tom! Ashley, I take Coromega. It comes in packets (it's not a pill, but more of a cream)....tastes like orange creamsicle flavor (I don't notice a fishy taste and have no fish burps). I keep them in the frig. I've seen them for sale in my local Albertson's, but usually get them at drugstore.com. They are great....I really feel like they are making a difference. I am just going to take it twice a day about 4 or 5 times a week this month and see what my d-dimer results are at the end of the month. I've had no reactions to taking this...no stomachaches or anything like that. I am aware that the d-dimer test is not perfect, but I feel pretty damn good when it measures so low :) If these results keep up, I will probably feel comfortable getting d-dimer tests every couple of months.
