High INR

I see Loveheart posted about low INR and that got me thinking about what happens (or what should happen to be more precise) when you have an INR that is too high.
My INRs have been pretty consistent between 2 and 3 for the last month but then last week I spiked a 6.5. The first doctor who I saw at the clinic after the test said not to take any warfarin for 2 days and then retest. When I went back for the retest the second doctor asked why I didn't go to the hospital. I said I wasn't advised that I should just to stop taking the warfarin for 2 days and come back. I asked if I should have gone to the hospital and the second doctor said yes to receive treatment. Like most things surrounding DVT and PE the recommendations probably vary from doctor to doctor and country to country but are there any general guidelines on this? Are there different levels of high INR? When do you need to receive active treatment to reduce the INR and when can you just stop taking the warfarin and let the INR reduce more slowly back to therapeutic levels? Well the hospital test showed that my INR was over 12. My doctor had to call a few people at the hospital and they were considering readmitting me but decided not necessary at present as I didn't have any major bleeds. So I was on 10mg of vit K last night and 10mg this morning with the advice that if I have any sort of bleeding at all to call an ambulance straight away. Well thankfully all seemed OK and the vit K didn't seem to have any side effects apart from possibly a bit of a bit of a stomach upset but that may have been my HUGE salad that I had last night anyway. I have an INR test later this afternoon and what happens then depends on how much the INR has dropped. The vit K works really well over just a few hours so my dr is a bit worried that it will have dropped too low and then I'll have to go back onto the injections again until the warfarin comes back up to therapeutic level. So I'll let you guys know the next part of the story after I get today's INR results!

Good luck travelnut - I hope your INR sorts itself out soon. It must have all been a nightmare for you! I've luckily been quite stable but now I'm wondering what on earth could have caused your INR to jump like that! I only get tested every 5/6 weeks so anything could be happening and I wouldn't know about it! Take care - Sxx

I'll hold the boulder while you stay away from any rough surfaces that you could scratch or cut yourself on.
Waiting for a REPORT.

Dero, you are too addicted to this site! I bet travelnut is currently sitting by her rock enjoying a hearty breakfast of broccoli and parsley salad :-)
Well, at least I hope so? 12 is unbelievably/shockingly high and I, too, wonder what made it go that way. I also hope those 20mg of vitamin K did the trick to bring it down again!!!

Hi Everyone and especially Dero and Pippalippa,
Relax. All OK :). The 20mg worked amazingly well and less than 24 hours later my INR was down to 1.6. I can't believe how it can go from 12 to less than 2 in such a short space of time. If would have said machine error but as I had 2 tests in the clinic and 1 at the hospital lab and they all said the same then I know it is correct. But, as I missed a days warfarin and it is below 2 I am now on the injections until the INR goes back into therapeutic range. I have another blood test tomorrow so hopefully it will be mid 2's and I can start getting it stabilised. The really great news is seeing as I was on the injections I was allowed to go back to work today which is why I haven't been able to post. Did a full day and feeling really shattered now but working from home tomorrow so will have recovery time. Dero - that old boulder is getting a bit lighter now and I am starting to push it up the hill rather than it crushing me! :) Thanks for all your kind thoughts.
