Dizziness/Weakness

Hello, everyone... I'm new here, my name is Jocelyn. My multiple pulmonary embolisms were diagnosed last week (if you want to know the whole story you can check my journal). I went home on lovenox but am now just on coumadin, alternating 7 and 5 milligrams every other day. I don't know what my level is because I forgot to ask when my doctor called today, but he said it's where it should be.

Anyway, last night was a really bad night. After a really amazing day in which I almost felt like I was back to normal (went to the laundromat, the library, and sushi with a friend), I came home and took my dose of coumadin. About twenty minutes later, I started to feel waves of dizziness. I then started to feel like every part of my body was weakening and I'm pretty sure came close to passing out. My roommates said I was extremely pale and looked awful.

The dizziness/weakness stayed with me all night. I laid down and drank a glass or two of water, which seemed to help. But everytime I stood up it would hit me hard again.

I know coumadin can lower blood pressure, and I'm pretty sure that's what I was experiencing but it was quite, well, frightening and also a huge hindrance to all of the work I still had left to do that night. I didn't get a chance to ask my doctor about it today as he seemed to be in a hurry to be off the phone, but I've felt fine all day.

Has anyone else experienced this while on coumadin? Is there anything I can do beyond staying hydrated and taking it slow to combat this? I'm going to buy myself a blood pressure monitor tonight so I can keep an eye on my BP at home. I also have a visit with my new, permanent doctor on Thursday and I'll be able to talk about this stuff then.

Thank you!

" hi- soory to hear whats been happening but it seems to be the norm for us folks. I was like that this morning in work. I felt all light headed in the bus to work then when I got into to work and just about to open some doors I felt as it i was going to pass out. I had to sit on the first chair i could grab. Felt real weak after this and then went to my doctor. He took my bp and pulse and both were fine. Told me to go home and rest which i ded. Still feel very tired and hopefully i'll feel fine in the morning. My stomache was a bit funny to. not the first time for this so still scary. Tell ur doc what happened but it is more than likely the meds. PS Im on warfarin. cheers. sean "

" Hi Jocelyn,

That could be low blood pressure and you should definitely monitor it if this continues.

This could also be a panic attack. If your blood pressure checks out OK and they can't find anything wrong with you at all, the odds that you are having a lot of anxiety is pretty high. "
