Hi

I have am having my second period since being diagnosed with a Saddle PE. Whenever I have a period my INR drops drastically. Last period it dropped from a too high 5.2 to 2.2 in a week. (The Warfarin had been reduced as well but not enough for that drastic a drop).

This period has dropped me from 2.8 to 1.6 in a week even though it has been stable for 2 weeks previous. I was on Warfarin earlier on in the year for a DVT and noticed a monthly fluctuation then so I asked my Dr.
She emphatically denies that there is any link between INR levels and periods. She also denies there being any weight gain attached to Warfarin but I have still put on a stone and a half in 5 weeks!

Is it just me or are anyone else's INR and hormones linked?

" I guess I would think that loosing some of the blood with the coumadin in it would lower your level -I have a home INR monitor and will check next time to see if it does it to me. Exercising made my level go down too -I am guessing from the blood being filtered more since my heartrate is up when I excercise. Blessings, Teri "

" I don't know about a weight-gain connection, but there have been previous posts from women who say that their INR fluctuates during their cycle just the way you describe. I had a DVT several years ago that coincided with a period, and my recent PE also coincided with a period. I wasn't on warfarin at the time, so I can't give you INR numbers, but I'm convinced there is a hormonal element at play here. Other women agree, although I don't think there is anything official in the medical literature that talks about this connection. "
