I am going on holiday to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks in September and i know that Chloroquine is the recommended anti malaria treatment but i am aware that it can in most cases exacerbate psoriasis and i don't really fancy having a flare up a week before i go as this is when you have to start taking the course. I know that i could take Proguanil instead which has no history of making psoriasis worse....does anyone have any useful info on this subject...?!

Hey there I dont know if this is an answer or even helps but I have psoriasis and just got back from a deployment in afghanistan. Everyones psoriasis is different but I took Mefloquine the entire deployment and never had any problems with my psoriasis being any worse. Not sure if chloroquine and mefloquine are the same thing or close to each other but just from personal experience I had no issues with taking Mefloquine and then when I returned I took Primaquine and had no issues. Hope this helps out and have fun on your holiday to the Dominican Republic.

I've already been prescribed Proguanil by my GP...means taking 2 tablets a day for 7 weeks but guess it's better than having a flare up especially on holiday! Thanks for everyones posts anyway!

Hi there,
I am new to this group so hello to all! By a strange coincidence I too am off to the Dom Rep in September and am a little concerned about vaccinations in general. I have just been to my docs to enquire about whether they will have any negative effect on my skin and she said that the only one that would, would be the malaria tabs. She suggested Deet based products if I don't want to risk any of them, but she said Chloroquine would be one to use as its not as strong an antibiotic as the others. Has anyone had any reactions from any of the other regular vaccines? Regards, Rob

I've already been to the doctors and had all required vaccinations with no effect to my psoriasis at all. As for Anti Malaria Tablets do NOT use Chloroquine...this is the one that can and most likely will make your skin worse! I've been prescribed Proguanil - in the form of Paludrine Tablets and have been guaranteed that these will not effect my skin! Only downside is that it means i have to take 2 tablets a day for 7 weeks :( but i'd rather that than an outbreak!!
