i have had psoriasis for 40 years. tried many different treatments. my doctor told me i should stop methotrexate after 12 years, and switch to embrel. that caused a reaction, so now i've not been on any systemics for a month. Needless to say, i am flaring.
However, i am determined to try gentler approaches to dealing with the psoriasis. i am interested in hearing from others who have used dietary, supplements, herbal, accupuncture, topicals other than cortisone. this is what i'm doing so far: a homeopathic remedy that was recommended minimize sugar, food additives, meat supplements: fish oil, lecithin, b complex, C, multi, calcium, vegetarian digestive enzymes and acidophilus increase in raw vegetables ground flax seeds almonds i stopped using commercial lotions and am using food grade sesame oil for moisturizing. for my hands, i am using an organic herbal formulation massage about 1X per month yoga every day polarity and reflexology at least 1x per week NEXT strategies from my reading and talking to people, i am learning that wheat and dairy products may have to be eliminated. YIKES! but i guess i can do it for a month or 2 and then see if i notice a difference. some of the theories that i've studied claim that psoriasis is caused by poor colon health, candida infections, and/or food allergies/intolerances. this sounds like a lot of work, but then, psoriasis has always been alot of work. the bonuses are: possible weight loss, lowered cholesterol, reduced arthritis symptoms, improved digestion. please share your experiences with using non-pharmaceutical approaches to psoriasis treatment Chiron Posted on 09/14/08, 12:09 pm |

Hi Chiron, All that sounds WONDERFUL of course. I do all that because i want to be healthy as i can be.. If your body is healthy then you will be healthy right? I think most of the time that will be true.
In addition to all that i use natural products, i have eliminated all bad food and bad products from my life. If it is full of chemicals and other toxins i remove it from my life. I also use several natural products especially for psoriasis, and i continue to use them even though i am clear. You can find the web address in my profile i believe. Good luck to you in clearing. I know you can do it. Don't give up!

Years ago, I had pretty good results with a burdock/folate lotion. I bought a burdock root tincture and add a few drops to my lotion... seems to help. They quit making the lotion though... this was in the early 80's.
Also, the homeopathic remedy, calcarea carbonica is supposed to help, I've recently added it to my regime. Tanning at the tanning salon helps me a lot. Also, I'm trying the banana peel cure. You rub the banana peel over your lesions once or twice a day. Also, back in the 80's, the doctor in the newspaper suggested washing the lesions with "Murphy's Oil Soap" A LOT of people swore by it although it didnt do anything for me. Good Luck!

Yes it is alot of work, have done similar things myself. I am currently using a non-pharmacutical product which I can't mention here becuase my husband sells it. In addition to using this, I have also abandoned sugars, buy as much organic food as possible and added regular excercise. I have a plethora of essential oils that I use to moisturize. Within the last month my lesions have thinned considerably and my cracked places have healed and not returned.
ALWAYS using natural as opposed to processed products is the preferred method. Healthy life style goes along way to healing.

Chiron,
I have been trying the gluten-free (no wheat, rye, barley) approach (with a couple of days that I cheated) for the past three weeks. It really has gotten much better. The day following the days that I cheated the psoriasis got worse (meaning more red). I am praying that going gluten-free for an extended period of time makes it totally go away. I'm feeling fairly hopeful as the results thus far have been great. Good luck on your journey! Renee

I use Eucerin. It's a cream that doesn't irritate the skin, but I have to apply it every day immediately after showering. The best part is, you can buy a good size jar for not much money at any drugstore.

I have been getting this drink called Zrii. It's Amalaki berry and other fruits. It is supposed to be good for detoxifying and an immunity booster. I take 2 shots a day and I have seen some improvements. I have been getting clear skin spots in my patches of P and my scalp patch was gone all summer until now. It is kind of pricy but I thought I would trial it.

Before you totally change your diet, let me share my experience with you. Because I suffer from IBS and Celiac Disease, as well as Hypoglycemia and Psoriasis, I follow (very very carefully) a wheat/gluten-free diet, a dairy free diet, a sugar free diet, AND I take Acidophillus 3X each day, AND I STILL HAVE PSORIASIS.
So........you can change your diet and eat really health, but don't expect to see any change in your psoriasis. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. All the best!
